Effect of Extension Education on Farmers’ Adoption of Seedling Root Protection Practices

Abstract

The study examines the effect of extension education on farmers’ adoption of seedling root protection practices. Protecting seedling roots is an important aspect of nursery management because young roots are sensitive to physical damage, excessive moisture, soil-borne organisms, and poor handling during nursery operations and transplanting. Appropriate root protection practices can support healthy root development, improve seedling establishment, and reduce losses after transplanting. Extension education can provide farmers with relevant knowledge and practical guidance on suitable methods of protecting seedling roots. The study will assess farmers’ exposure to extension education on seedling root protection and examine the extent to which farmers adopt recommended practices. It will also identify the major root protection methods used by farmers and determine the types of information provided through extension education programmes. The study will consider practices such as careful seedling handling, protection of root systems during lifting and transportation, proper moisture management, avoidance of root exposure, suitable transplanting procedures, and protection of roots from physical damage. A descriptive survey design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise crop farmers involved in nursery production in the selected study area, from whom respondents will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire administered to the sampled farmers. Descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation will be used to analyze the data, while an appropriate inferential statistical technique will be employed to determine the effect of extension education on farmers’ adoption of seedling root protection practices. The study is expected to reveal the level of farmers’ exposure to extension education on seedling root protection and the extent of their adoption of recommended practices. It is also expected to identify the common root protection methods used by farmers and the major challenges encountered during nursery operations, transportation, and transplanting. The findings may further indicate areas where additional extension education and practical demonstrations are required to improve farmers’ knowledge and application of effective seedling root protection practices. The study will be useful to agricultural extension officers, crop development agencies, nursery operators, policymakers, and farmers’ organizations by providing information on the role of extension education in promoting appropriate seedling root protection. The findings may assist extension personnel in developing practical educational programmes that emphasize careful seedling handling, root protection during transportation, proper transplanting, and appropriate moisture management. Improved root protection practices may contribute to healthier seedlings, better establishment, and reduced transplanting losses. The study will conclude by assessing the contribution of extension education to farmers’ adoption of appropriate seedling root protection practices. Based on the findings, the study will recommend regular extension visits, practical demonstrations, farmer training programmes, and improved access to technical information on nursery and transplanting management. These measures may strengthen farmers’ ability to protect seedling roots effectively and support successful crop establishment and sustainable agricultural production.
