Effect of Extension Education on Farmers’ Adoption of Livestock Feed Storage Practices

Abstract

The study examines the effect of extension education on farmers’ adoption of livestock feed storage practices. Proper storage of livestock feed is essential for maintaining feed quality, reducing spoilage, preventing contamination, and ensuring adequate availability of feed for livestock production. Inadequate feed storage may expose feed materials to moisture, pests, rodents, mould growth, and other conditions that can reduce their nutritional value and increase production losses. Extension education can provide farmers with practical knowledge and information on appropriate methods of storing different types of livestock feed. The study will assess the level of farmers’ exposure to extension education on livestock feed storage and examine the extent to which farmers adopt recommended feed storage practices. It will also identify the common storage methods used by livestock farmers and determine the practices promoted through agricultural extension programmes. The study will consider practices such as proper drying of feed materials, use of suitable storage containers, protection from moisture and pests, adequate ventilation, proper stacking, and regular inspection of stored feed. A descriptive survey design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise livestock farmers in the selected study area, from whom respondents will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire administered to the sampled farmers. Descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation will be used to summarize the data, while an appropriate inferential statistical technique will be used to determine the effect of extension education on farmers’ adoption of livestock feed storage practices. The study is expected to reveal the level of farmers’ participation in extension education on livestock feed storage and the extent of their adoption of recommended storage practices. It is also expected to identify important storage practices commonly adopted by farmers and areas where adoption remains inadequate. The findings may further reveal the contribution of extension education in improving farmers’ knowledge and application of proper livestock feed storage methods. The study will be useful to agricultural extension officers, livestock development agencies, policymakers, and farmers’ organizations by providing information on the role of extension education in promoting effective feed storage. The findings may assist extension personnel in developing practical training programmes that address farmers’ storage needs and encourage improved handling and preservation of livestock feed. Improved feed storage practices may contribute to reduced feed wastage, better feed quality, and more efficient livestock production. The study will conclude by assessing the role of extension education in promoting farmers’ adoption of appropriate livestock feed storage practices. Based on the findings, the study will recommend strengthened extension education programmes, practical demonstrations, regular advisory visits, and improved access to information on effective feed storage techniques. Such measures may enhance farmers’ capacity to preserve livestock feed properly and support sustainable livestock production.
