Effect of Extension Education on Farmers’ Adoption of Farm Monitoring Practices

Abstract

The study will examine the effect of extension education on farmers’ adoption of farm monitoring practices. Farm monitoring involves the regular observation and assessment of farm activities, resources, production conditions, and operational performance to support timely decision-making. Effective monitoring can help farmers identify changes in farm conditions, detect emerging problems, track progress, and improve the management of agricultural activities. The study will focus on the extent to which farmers adopt farm monitoring practices following extension education. Specific areas will include regular observation of crop and livestock conditions, monitoring of farm inputs, recording farm activities, tracking production progress, observing field conditions, checking farm resource use, identifying operational problems, and reviewing farm performance. Extension education is expected to provide farmers with relevant knowledge and practical skills for carrying out systematic monitoring of their farm operations. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers in the selected study area, from whom respondents will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on farmers’ exposure to extension education, knowledge of farm monitoring, and adoption of relevant monitoring practices. The data collected will be analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, standard deviation, and an appropriate inferential statistical technique. The study is expected to reveal that extension education contributes to farmers’ knowledge and adoption of farm monitoring practices. The findings may indicate improvements in farmers’ ability to regularly observe farm conditions, monitor inputs and activities, identify problems, record relevant observations, and assess production progress. The study may also reveal areas where farmers experience difficulties in applying systematic monitoring practices. The findings will be useful to agricultural extension officers, agricultural development agencies, farmers’ organizations, and policymakers by providing information on the role of extension education in strengthening farmers’ farm management practices. The findings may also assist extension personnel in designing educational programmes that emphasize practical monitoring skills and encourage farmers to use regular observations and records in managing their farm operations. The study will conclude that effective extension education can enhance farmers’ knowledge and adoption of farm monitoring practices. It will recommend that extension officers strengthen educational programmes through practical demonstrations, farm visits, monitoring exercises, and follow-up advisory services to encourage farmers to regularly observe, record, and assess conditions and activities on their farms.
