Effect of Extension Education on Farmers’ Adoption of Farm Landscape Management Practices

Abstract

Farm landscape management practices involve the planned use and conservation of agricultural land, vegetation, water resources, field boundaries, and other landscape features to support sustainable agricultural production. Proper management of farm landscapes can contribute to soil conservation, biodiversity protection, efficient resource use, and improved farm productivity. Extension education provides farmers with knowledge, skills, and practical information that can influence their understanding and adoption of appropriate landscape management practices. This study will examine the effect of extension education on farmers’ adoption of farm landscape management practices. It will assess the extent to which extension education improves farmers’ knowledge of landscape management and influences their willingness and ability to apply recommended practices on their farms. The study will also examine the level of farmers’ exposure to extension education and the adoption of selected farm landscape management practices. The study will focus on extension education, farmers’ knowledge, extension contact, farm landscape management, soil conservation, vegetation management, water management, field boundary management, erosion control, agroforestry practices, and sustainable land use. Attention will be given to farmers’ participation in extension meetings, demonstrations, training programmes, field visits, and other educational activities through which information on farm landscape management is communicated. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to extension education, knowledge of farm landscape management, and adoption of recommended practices. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the relationship between extension education and farmers’ adoption of farm landscape management practices. The study is expected to reveal that farmers who receive regular and relevant extension education may demonstrate greater knowledge and adoption of appropriate farm landscape management practices. Extension education may improve farmers’ understanding of soil conservation, vegetation maintenance, erosion control, water management, and the importance of maintaining productive landscape features. However, the level of adoption may also vary according to farmers’ access to extension services, farm size, available resources, labour, and perceived benefits of the practices. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, environmental organisations, policymakers, and researchers. It may provide useful information for improving extension education programmes and developing practical training approaches that encourage farmers to manage their farm landscapes sustainably. The findings may also assist extension agencies in identifying knowledge gaps and strengthening educational interventions aimed at promoting sustainable agricultural land management. The study concludes that extension education is an important component of efforts to improve farmers’ knowledge and adoption of farm landscape management practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer training, demonstrations, field visits, and practical advisory services on landscape management. Extension programmes should provide farmers with accessible and practical information on soil conservation, vegetation management, erosion control, water management, and sustainable land-use practices to encourage effective farm landscape management.
