Effect of Extension Education on Farmers’ Adoption of Farm Labour Performance Recording

Abstract

Farm labour performance recording is an important farm management practice that enables farmers to monitor labour activities, work output, time spent on farm operations, and the performance of individual or groups of farm workers. Proper recording can support effective labour planning, task allocation, supervision, and evaluation of farm operations. However, many farmers may have limited knowledge of systematic labour performance recording and may rely on informal methods of monitoring farm workers. Extension education can provide farmers with the knowledge and practical skills required to adopt appropriate labour performance recording practices. This study will examine the effect of extension education on farmers’ adoption of farm labour performance recording. The study will assess farmers’ exposure to extension education, determine their level of knowledge of labour performance recording practices, and examine the extent to which extension education influences their adoption of appropriate recording methods. It will also assess the types of extension information and practical guidance provided to farmers on labour monitoring and performance documentation. The study will focus on extension education, farm labour performance recording, farmers’ knowledge, extension contact, labour attendance records, task allocation records, work-hour recording, task completion, labour output, worker performance monitoring, farm activity documentation, labour supervision, and adoption of recommended recording practices. Information will be obtained from farmers to determine their exposure to extension education and the extent to which the knowledge acquired is applied in managing and recording farm labour activities. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires and appropriate observation methods. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distributions, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between extension education and farmers’ adoption of farm labour performance recording practices. The study is expected to reveal that extension education may improve farmers’ knowledge and adoption of farm labour performance recording practices. Farmers who receive regular extension education, practical demonstrations, and advisory support may demonstrate greater use of attendance records, work-hour records, task completion records, and labour output documentation. The study may also indicate that practical training and regular extension contact contribute to improved labour monitoring and more systematic documentation of farm work activities. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, farm managers, agricultural cooperatives, researchers, non-governmental organizations, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes that promote improved farm management and labour utilization. The findings may also assist extension personnel in developing simple and practical record-keeping methods that farmers can use to monitor labour performance and improve the organization of farm operations. The study concludes that extension education is an important source of knowledge and practical support for improving farmers’ adoption of farm labour performance recording practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer education, practical demonstrations, farm visits, and follow-up advisory services on labour documentation and performance monitoring. Extension programmes should emphasize simple attendance, work-hour, task completion, and output recording methods to support effective labour management and improved farm productivity.
