Effect of Extension Education on Farmers’ Adoption of Farm-Based Educational Activities

Abstract

Farm-based educational activities provide opportunities for farmers to use agricultural enterprises as practical learning environments where visitors, students, community members, and other participants can gain knowledge about farming and food production. Such activities may include farm tours, practical demonstrations, agricultural workshops, crop and livestock demonstrations, guided learning sessions, and other educational experiences. Extension education can support farmers by providing the knowledge, skills, and guidance needed to develop and manage farm-based educational activities effectively. This study will examine the effect of extension education on farmers’ adoption of farm-based educational activities. It will assess the extent to which extension education influences farmers’ knowledge and use of educational activities on their farms. The study will also examine the contribution of extension training, demonstrations, advisory visits, educational materials, and information dissemination to farmers’ adoption of farm-based educational activities. The study will focus on extension education, farm-based educational activities, farmers’ knowledge, farm tours, practical demonstrations, agricultural workshops, guided learning, educational farm visits, visitor engagement, agricultural communication, farm-based learning, educational materials, farm management, agritourism activities, and adoption of farm-based educational practices. It will also assess farmers’ sources of information and identify challenges that may limit their participation in farm-based educational activities. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to extension education, knowledge of farm-based educational activities, and level of adoption. The collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the effect of extension education on farmers’ adoption of farm-based educational activities. The study is expected to reveal that extension education may have a significant effect on farmers’ adoption of farm-based educational activities. Farmers who receive regular training, practical demonstrations, and advisory support may demonstrate greater knowledge and participation in farm tours, agricultural demonstrations, guided learning sessions, workshops, and other educational activities. Adoption may also vary according to farmers’ access to extension services, farm facilities, communication skills, availability of educational materials, and perceived benefits of farm-based learning activities. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, schools, tourism organisations, farmer cooperatives, government agricultural agencies, development organisations, educational institutions, and agricultural researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes that promote agricultural education through farm-based activities. The findings may also assist stakeholders in developing practical training programmes that enable farmers to integrate educational experiences into their agricultural enterprises. The study concludes that extension education can contribute to improved adoption of farm-based educational activities by increasing farmers’ knowledge, communication skills, and capacity to organise practical agricultural learning experiences. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies provide regular training, demonstrations, and advisory services on farm-based educational activities, visitor management, practical demonstrations, and educational programme development. Farmers should also be encouraged to adopt suitable educational activities that promote agricultural learning, strengthen community engagement, and create additional opportunities for farm-based income generation.
