Effect of Extension Education on Farmers’ Adoption of Agricultural Inventory Checking Practices

Abstract

The study will examine the effect of extension education on farmers’ adoption of agricultural inventory checking practices. Agricultural inventory checking involves the regular examination and verification of farm inputs, equipment, stored produce, supplies, and other resources to determine their availability, quantity, condition, and accuracy of records. Proper inventory checking can help farmers identify shortages, prevent unnecessary losses, improve resource management, and support effective planning of farm activities. The study will focus on the extent to which farmers adopt agricultural inventory checking practices following extension education. Specific areas will include physical inspection of farm supplies, checking stored produce quantities, verifying input balances, examining the condition of farm equipment, comparing physical items with inventory records, identifying missing or damaged items, updating inventory information, and conducting regular inventory checks. Extension education is expected to provide farmers with relevant knowledge and practical skills for carrying out systematic inventory checking. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers in the selected study area, from whom respondents will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on farmers’ exposure to extension education, knowledge of agricultural inventory checking, and adoption of relevant practices. The data collected will be analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, standard deviation, and an appropriate inferential statistical technique. The study is expected to reveal that extension education contributes to farmers’ adoption of agricultural inventory checking practices. The findings may indicate improvements in farmers’ ability to physically inspect farm resources, verify quantities, compare available items with records, identify shortages or damaged resources, update inventory records, and conduct regular checks. The study may also identify challenges that limit farmers’ consistent application of inventory checking practices. The findings will be useful to agricultural extension officers, agricultural development agencies, farmers’ organizations, farm managers, and policymakers by providing information on the role of extension education in improving agricultural inventory management. The findings may assist extension personnel in developing practical educational programmes that strengthen farmers’ record-keeping, resource monitoring, and inventory management skills. The study will conclude that effective extension education can enhance farmers’ knowledge and adoption of agricultural inventory checking practices. It will recommend that agricultural extension officers provide practical demonstrations, inventory-checking exercises, advisory visits, and follow-up support on physical verification, record comparison, condition assessment, and regular updating of agricultural inventory information.
