Effect of Extension Education on Farmers’ Adoption of Agricultural Business Contingency Planning

Abstract

The study examines the effect of extension education on farmers’ adoption of agricultural business contingency planning. Agricultural business contingency planning involves preparing alternative courses of action to help farm enterprises respond to unexpected events such as production disruptions, market changes, financial difficulties, input shortages, and other challenges that may affect business operations. Extension education can provide farmers with knowledge and practical skills for identifying potential disruptions and preparing appropriate responses. The study will assess farmers’ access to extension education on agricultural business contingency planning and determine the extent to which extension personnel educate farmers on identifying potential risks, developing alternative operational plans, managing resources, maintaining financial records, and preparing recovery measures. It will also examine the level of farmers’ adoption of agricultural business contingency planning practices and identify the major contingency measures used by farmers in managing their enterprises. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires administered through an appropriate sampling procedure. The data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation, while an appropriate inferential statistical technique will be used to determine the effect of extension education on farmers’ adoption of agricultural business contingency planning. The study is expected to reveal that farmers who receive regular extension education are more likely to adopt agricultural business contingency planning practices. Extension education is expected to improve farmers’ ability to identify potential disruptions, develop alternative strategies, allocate resources effectively, and maintain business operations during difficult periods. However, inadequate extension contact, limited financial resources, insufficient business management knowledge, and poor access to relevant market information may constrain adoption. The findings will be useful to agricultural extension officers, agricultural development agencies, policymakers, financial institutions, agribusiness organizations, and farmers’ associations by providing information on the role of extension education in promoting preparedness among agricultural enterprises. The findings may also assist extension personnel in developing practical educational programmes that strengthen farmers’ capacity to anticipate disruptions and prepare appropriate responses. The study will conclude that effective extension education can contribute to improved adoption of agricultural business contingency planning among farmers. It will recommend strengthening extension education on contingency planning and business risk preparedness, improving farmers’ access to financial and market information, and providing practical guidance on alternative resource arrangements, financial preparedness, recordkeeping, and business recovery strategies.
