Effect of Agricultural Training on Farmers’ Knowledge of Good Agricultural Practices
Abstract
Good Agricultural Practices are important for improving the quality, safety, productivity, and sustainability of agricultural production. Farmers require adequate knowledge of recommended practices to ensure proper land preparation, use of quality inputs, crop management, safe application of agrochemicals, soil conservation, water management, harvesting, and post-harvest handling. However, inadequate technical knowledge may limit farmers’ ability to apply recommended agricultural practices effectively. Agricultural training provides an important means of improving farmers’ knowledge through practical instruction, demonstrations, technical information, and capacity-building activities. This study will examine the effect of agricultural training on farmers’ knowledge of Good Agricultural Practices. The study will assess the extent to which agricultural training improves farmers’ understanding of recommended production practices. It will also determine farmers’ level of knowledge in different areas of Good Agricultural Practices and examine the relationship between exposure to agricultural training and farmers’ knowledge of recommended techniques. The study will focus on agricultural training sessions, practical demonstrations, field-based instruction, workshops, training materials, and technical guidance provided to farmers. Farmers’ knowledge will be assessed in areas such as land preparation, selection and use of quality seeds, appropriate fertilizer application, soil and water management, integrated pest management, safe use of agrochemicals, farm hygiene, environmental protection, harvesting, storage, and post-harvest handling. The study will identify areas where farmers have adequate knowledge and areas requiring additional training. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires and knowledge assessment items designed to measure exposure to agricultural training and knowledge of Good Agricultural Practices. The collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the relationship between agricultural training and farmers’ knowledge of recommended agricultural practices. The study is expected to reveal that agricultural training has a positive effect on farmers’ knowledge of Good Agricultural Practices. Farmers who participate in relevant and practical training may demonstrate better knowledge of crop production, input management, agrochemical safety, soil conservation, farm hygiene, harvesting, and post-harvest practices. The study may also identify knowledge gaps in areas such as safe agrochemical handling, environmental management, and post-harvest management, indicating the need for continuous agricultural training. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, government agricultural agencies, non-governmental organisations, agricultural development programmes, policymakers, and researchers. The findings may assist agricultural service providers in designing appropriate training programmes that address farmers’ knowledge needs and promote the dissemination of recommended agricultural practices. It may also support efforts to improve agricultural productivity, product quality, food safety, and environmental sustainability. The study concludes that agricultural training is an important approach for improving farmers’ knowledge of Good Agricultural Practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies and other agricultural development organisations strengthen regular training, practical demonstrations, field instruction, and follow-up education for farmers. Training programmes should provide clear and practical information on production, input use, agrochemical safety, environmental protection, harvesting, and post-harvest handling to strengthen farmers’ knowledge and support sustainable agricultural production.
