Effect of Agricultural Extension Services on Farmers’ Adoption of Weighing Practices for Farm Produce

Abstract

The study will examine the effect of agricultural extension services on farmers’ adoption of weighing practices for farm produce. Accurate weighing of agricultural produce is an important farm management and marketing practice that enables farmers to determine the quantity of produce available for sale, establish fair transaction quantities, maintain reliable records, and improve the transparency of produce marketing. Proper weighing can also support better planning of farm operations and reduce disagreements between farmers and buyers. The study will focus on the extent to which farmers adopt appropriate weighing practices for farm produce. Specific areas will include the use of suitable weighing equipment, proper calibration of weighing devices, accurate measurement of produce quantities, checking weight before sales transactions, recording measured quantities, maintaining weighing equipment, and communicating produce weights clearly to buyers. Agricultural extension services are expected to provide farmers with relevant information and practical guidance on the correct use and management of weighing practices. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers in the selected study area, from whom respondents will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on farmers’ access to agricultural extension services, knowledge of produce weighing, and adoption of weighing practices. The data collected will be analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, standard deviation, and an appropriate inferential statistical technique. The study is expected to reveal that agricultural extension services contribute to farmers’ adoption of appropriate weighing practices for farm produce. The findings may indicate improvements in farmers’ use of suitable weighing equipment, accuracy of measurements, weighing records, equipment maintenance, and verification of produce quantities during transactions. The study may also identify challenges that limit farmers’ consistent use of proper weighing practices. The findings will be useful to agricultural extension officers, agricultural development agencies, farmers’ organizations, produce marketers, and policymakers by providing information on the contribution of extension services to accurate produce measurement and marketing practices. The findings may also assist extension personnel in developing practical advisory programmes that improve farmers’ knowledge and skills in the use of weighing equipment and accurate measurement procedures. The study will conclude that effective agricultural extension services can enhance farmers’ adoption of appropriate weighing practices for farm produce. It will recommend that extension officers provide practical demonstrations, training, and follow-up advisory visits on the proper use, calibration, maintenance, and recording of weighing equipment to encourage accurate measurement and improve transparency in farm produce transactions.
