Effect of Agricultural Extension Services on Farmers’ Adoption of Spray Equipment Cleaning Practices

Abstract

The study examines the effect of agricultural extension services on farmers’ adoption of spray equipment cleaning practices. Proper cleaning of agricultural spray equipment is important for maintaining equipment performance, preventing contamination, reducing unwanted chemical residues, and supporting safer crop protection activities. Inadequate cleaning may lead to the accumulation of residues, blockage of spray components, cross-contamination between products, and deterioration of equipment. Agricultural extension services can provide farmers with relevant information and practical guidance on appropriate cleaning and maintenance procedures. The study will assess farmers’ access to agricultural extension services on spray equipment cleaning and examine the extent to which farmers adopt recommended cleaning practices. It will also identify the major cleaning methods used by farmers and determine the types of extension information provided on spray equipment hygiene and maintenance. The study will consider practices such as cleaning spray tanks, flushing spray lines, washing nozzles and filters, removing residues after use, using appropriate cleaning procedures, and maintaining clean equipment before subsequent spraying operations. A descriptive survey design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise crop farmers who use agricultural spraying equipment in the selected study area, from whom respondents will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire administered to the sampled farmers. Descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation will be used to analyze the data, while an appropriate inferential statistical technique will be employed to determine the effect of agricultural extension services on farmers’ adoption of spray equipment cleaning practices. The study is expected to reveal the level of farmers’ access to agricultural extension services on spray equipment cleaning and the extent of their adoption of recommended practices. It is also expected to identify the common cleaning practices used by farmers and the major challenges encountered in maintaining clean spraying equipment. The findings may further indicate areas where additional extension education, practical demonstrations, and technical guidance are required to improve farmers’ cleaning and maintenance practices. The study will be useful to agricultural extension officers, crop protection agencies, policymakers, and farmers’ organizations by providing information on the role of agricultural extension services in promoting appropriate spray equipment cleaning. The findings may assist extension personnel in developing practical training programmes on equipment cleaning, residue removal, nozzle maintenance, and proper equipment handling. Improved cleaning practices may contribute to better equipment performance, reduced contamination, and more efficient crop protection operations. The study will conclude by assessing the contribution of agricultural extension services to farmers’ adoption of appropriate spray equipment cleaning practices. Based on the findings, the study will recommend regular extension visits, practical demonstrations, farmer training programmes, and improved access to technical information on spray equipment cleaning and maintenance. These measures may strengthen farmers’ capacity to maintain spraying equipment properly and support efficient and responsible crop protection practices.
