Effect of Agricultural Extension Services on Farmers’ Adoption of Integrated Farm Planning Practices

Abstract

The study examines the effect of agricultural extension services on farmers’ adoption of integrated farm planning practices. Integrated farm planning involves the coordinated planning of different farm activities, resources, inputs, labour, production operations, financial requirements, and marketing activities to improve the overall management of the farm. Agricultural extension services can provide farmers with relevant knowledge, technical guidance, and practical information needed to plan and coordinate farm activities effectively. Assessing the effect of extension services on farmers’ adoption of integrated farm planning practices is therefore important for improving farm management and agricultural productivity. The study will determine the effect of agricultural extension services on farmers’ adoption of integrated farm planning practices. It will specifically assess farmers’ access to extension services, the types of extension support received, and the extent to which farmers adopt integrated farm planning practices such as production scheduling, resource planning, labour planning, input planning, farm activity coordination, budgeting, and marketing planning. The study will also examine the contribution of agricultural extension services to farmers’ understanding and application of integrated farm planning practices. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers in the selected study area, from whom respondents will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on farmers’ access to extension services, types of extension support received, and adoption of integrated farm planning practices. The data collected will be analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation, while an appropriate inferential statistical technique will be used to determine the effect of agricultural extension services on farmers’ adoption of integrated farm planning practices. The study is expected to reveal that agricultural extension services contribute positively to farmers’ adoption of integrated farm planning practices. Farmers who receive regular extension advice, training, demonstrations, farm visits, and technical guidance are expected to demonstrate greater awareness and application of coordinated farm planning activities. However, variations in adoption may occur due to differences in farmers’ access to extension personnel, availability of resources, farm size, and other farming conditions. The findings will provide useful information to agricultural extension personnel, policymakers, agricultural development agencies, farmer organizations, and other stakeholders involved in improving farm management practices. The findings are expected to demonstrate the importance of extension services in providing farmers with practical knowledge and guidance on integrated farm planning. The study will also provide information that can support the improvement of extension programmes designed to strengthen farmers’ planning and management capabilities. The study will conclude that agricultural extension services are an important source of knowledge and technical support for farmers adopting integrated farm planning practices. It will recommend strengthening extension outreach, increasing regular farm visits and practical training, improving access to farm planning information, and encouraging extension personnel to provide farmers with relevant planning tools and guidance. Improved extension support is expected to enhance farmers’ ability to coordinate farm resources and activities more effectively.
