Effect of Agricultural Extension on Livestock Farmers’ Adoption of Grazing Calendar Management

Abstract

Grazing calendar management is an important livestock management practice that helps farmers organize the use of grazing resources according to seasonal availability, pasture condition, and livestock requirements. Proper grazing scheduling can support pasture regeneration, reduce excessive pressure on grazing land, improve livestock feeding, and promote more sustainable use of available grazing resources. However, livestock farmers may face challenges in planning and implementing appropriate grazing schedules due to limited technical knowledge and inadequate access to agricultural information. Agricultural extension can provide farmers with relevant knowledge and advisory support to improve their grazing management practices. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension on livestock farmers’ adoption of grazing calendar management. The study will assess livestock farmers’ access to agricultural extension services, determine their knowledge of grazing calendar management, and examine the extent to which extension support influences their adoption of recommended grazing scheduling practices. It will also assess the frequency of extension contact and the types of grazing management information provided to livestock farmers. The study will focus on agricultural extension, grazing calendar management, livestock farmers’ knowledge, extension contact, pasture availability, grazing scheduling, rotational grazing, seasonal grazing planning, pasture utilization, livestock movement, grazing duration, pasture recovery, stocking management, and adoption of recommended grazing management practices. Information will be obtained from livestock farmers to determine their exposure to agricultural extension and the extent to which extension information is applied in their grazing activities. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected livestock farmers using structured questionnaires and appropriate field observation methods. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distributions, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between agricultural extension and farmers’ adoption of grazing calendar management practices. The study is expected to reveal that agricultural extension may improve livestock farmers’ knowledge and adoption of grazing calendar management practices. Farmers with regular access to extension agents, practical demonstrations, and technical advisory information may demonstrate greater use of seasonal grazing schedules, rotational grazing arrangements, appropriate grazing duration, pasture recovery periods, and planned livestock movement. The study may also indicate that regular extension contact and timely information contribute to improved management of grazing resources. The study will be useful to livestock farmers, agricultural extension agents, livestock development agencies, agricultural cooperatives, researchers, non-governmental organizations, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes aimed at improving pasture and grazing management. The findings may also assist extension personnel in developing practical advisory programmes that address farmers’ needs in planning grazing activities and managing available pasture resources efficiently. The study concludes that agricultural extension is an important source of technical knowledge and advisory support for improving livestock farmers’ adoption of grazing calendar management. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen regular farm visits, practical demonstrations, farmer training, and follow-up advisory services on grazing scheduling and pasture management. Extension programmes should emphasize seasonal grazing planning, rotational grazing, pasture recovery, livestock movement, and sustainable pasture utilization to support improved livestock management.
