Effect of Agricultural Extension on Fish Farmers’ Adoption of Pond Record Management

Abstract

Pond record management involves the systematic recording, organisation, and use of information relating to the activities and performance of fish ponds. Proper pond records can help fish farmers monitor stocking, feeding, fish growth, mortality, water management, treatments, harvesting, sales, and production expenses. Effective record management can therefore support informed decision-making, improve production planning, and strengthen the financial and operational management of aquaculture enterprises. Agricultural extension services can provide fish farmers with the knowledge and practical guidance required to establish and maintain useful pond records. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension on fish farmers’ adoption of pond record management practices. It will assess how access to agricultural extension services influences fish farmers’ knowledge and use of appropriate methods for recording and managing pond-related information. The study will also determine the extent to which fish farmers adopt pond record management practices in their aquaculture enterprises. The study will focus on extension services, pond record keeping, stocking records, feeding records, fish growth records, mortality records, water quality records, treatment records, harvesting records, sales records, production expenses, and farm performance monitoring. It will also examine farmers’ exposure to extension advice on record management and the extent to which such information supports the regular and accurate documentation of pond activities.

A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected fish farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on farmers’ access to agricultural extension services and adoption of pond record management practices. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the effect of agricultural extension on fish farmers’ adoption of pond record management practices. The study is expected to reveal that agricultural extension may have a significant effect on fish farmers’ adoption of pond record management practices. Fish farmers who receive relevant extension information and practical training may demonstrate greater use of stocking, feeding, growth, mortality, water quality, harvesting, sales, and expenditure records. The findings may also indicate that regular extension contact and practical demonstrations improve farmers’ ability to maintain accurate records and use recorded information for production and business decisions. The study will be useful to fish farmers, agricultural extension agents, fisheries development agencies, aquaculture associations, fish farm managers, government institutions, policymakers, and researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes that promote effective record management in aquaculture. The findings may also assist fish farmers in monitoring production performance, controlling costs, identifying management problems, improving planning, and strengthening the sustainability of their fish farming enterprises. The study concludes that agricultural extension can contribute to improving fish farmers’ adoption of effective pond record management practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension programmes provide practical training on the types, methods, and uses of pond records, including stocking, feeding, growth, mortality, water quality, harvesting, sales, and expenditure records. Extension agents should also encourage regular record updating and demonstrate how farmers can use recorded information to improve pond management and aquaculture decision-making.
