Effect of Agricultural Extension on Farmers’ Knowledge of Biofertilizer Application

Abstract

Biofertilizer application is an agricultural practice that involves the use of beneficial microorganisms or biological materials to improve nutrient availability, soil fertility, and crop growth. Biofertilizers can support sustainable nutrient management by enhancing biological processes in the soil and potentially reducing dependence on conventional chemical fertilizers. Farmers’ knowledge of appropriate biofertilizer application methods is therefore important for ensuring effective use and achieving the expected benefits in crop production. Agricultural extension can provide farmers with relevant information and practical guidance on biofertilizer handling and application. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ knowledge of biofertilizer application. It will assess farmers’ exposure to agricultural extension services and determine how extension contact influences their understanding of recommended biofertilizer application practices. The study will also identify areas of knowledge where farmers may require additional technical education and support. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of biofertilizer types, appropriate crops, application rates, application timing, methods of application, seed treatment, soil application, storage, handling, moisture requirements, compatibility with other inputs, and precautions during use. Attention will also be given to extension activities such as farm visits, training programmes, practical demonstrations, farmer group meetings, field days, and distribution of agricultural information. These activities may improve farmers’ understanding of the proper use and management of biofertilizers. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires and knowledge assessment instruments. Descriptive statistics such as frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize farmers’ knowledge levels. Knowledge scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis will also be used to determine the relationship between agricultural extension and farmers’ knowledge of biofertilizer application. The study is expected to reveal that farmers with greater exposure to agricultural extension services may demonstrate higher levels of knowledge of biofertilizer application. Extension contact may improve farmers’ understanding of appropriate biofertilizer types, application rates, timing, handling, and methods of use. However, limited awareness of biofertilizer technologies, inadequate extension contact, insufficient practical demonstrations, poor access to quality biofertilizer products, and limited technical information may contribute to knowledge gaps among farmers. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, biofertilizer producers and suppliers, agricultural development agencies, researchers, government institutions, and non-governmental organizations. It may provide useful information on the contribution of agricultural extension to farmers’ knowledge of biofertilizer application and identify areas requiring additional technical support. The findings may also assist agricultural agencies in designing practical extension programmes that promote appropriate biofertilizer use and sustainable soil fertility management. The study concludes that agricultural extension can play an important role in improving farmers’ knowledge of biofertilizer application. It is therefore recommended that extension agencies strengthen farmer education through practical demonstrations, regular farm visits, training programmes, and accessible technical information on biofertilizer use. Farmers should also be encouraged to obtain biofertilizer information from reliable sources and follow recommended application procedures to improve nutrient management, soil fertility, and sustainable crop production.
