Effect of Agricultural Extension on Farmers’ Knowledge of Agricultural Machinery Service Enterprises

Abstract

Agricultural machinery service enterprises provide farmers with access to mechanised farm operations through machinery hiring, equipment rental, repair, maintenance, and other related services. These enterprises can help farmers overcome the high cost of purchasing agricultural machinery and improve access to timely farm operations. Farmers’ knowledge of machinery service enterprises is important because adequate information can help them identify available services, understand their benefits, assess service costs, and make appropriate decisions regarding the use of agricultural machinery. Agricultural extension can support this knowledge development through information dissemination, training, demonstrations, and advisory services. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ knowledge of agricultural machinery service enterprises. It will assess farmers’ exposure to agricultural extension services and determine their level of knowledge regarding machinery service enterprises. The study will also examine the relationship between extension contact and farmers’ knowledge of available machinery services, service providers, hiring arrangements, costs, and equipment maintenance services. The study will focus on extension visits, training programmes, machinery demonstrations, field days, advisory information, farmer group activities, and information provided by extension agents on agricultural machinery service enterprises. Farmers’ knowledge will cover machinery hiring, equipment rental, tractor services, planting and harvesting services, equipment repair and maintenance, service costs, booking procedures, service provider identification, and appropriate machinery selection for different farm operations. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to agricultural extension and knowledge of agricultural machinery service enterprises. Descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while knowledge indices, correlation analysis, and regression analysis will be used to determine the relationship between agricultural extension and farmers’ knowledge of machinery service enterprises. The study is expected to reveal that farmers with greater exposure to agricultural extension services may demonstrate higher levels of knowledge of agricultural machinery service enterprises. Regular extension contact, practical machinery demonstrations, training, and timely information may improve farmers’ understanding of available machinery services and their appropriate use. However, inadequate extension coverage, limited machinery demonstrations, poor access to information, high service costs, limited availability of machinery service providers, and inadequate rural infrastructure may contribute to knowledge gaps. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, machinery service providers, agricultural mechanisation organisations, government agencies, agricultural researchers, non-governmental organisations, and policymakers. It may provide useful information on the contribution of agricultural extension to farmers’ understanding of machinery service enterprises and identify gaps in information delivery. The findings may also assist extension organisations and machinery service providers in developing appropriate awareness and training programmes for farmers. The study concludes that agricultural extension can play an important role in improving farmers’ knowledge of agricultural machinery service enterprises by providing relevant information, demonstrations, and advisory support. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen machinery-related education through practical demonstrations, field days, farmer training, advisory visits, and information materials while establishing stronger linkages between farmers and agricultural machinery service providers.
