Effect of Agricultural Extension on Farmers’ Knowledge of Agricultural Loan Management

Abstract

Agricultural loans provide farmers with financial resources for purchasing inputs, acquiring equipment, expanding farm operations, and meeting other production needs. Effective loan management is important for ensuring that borrowed funds are used productively, repayment obligations are properly managed, and farmers avoid unnecessary financial difficulties. Agricultural extension services can support farmers by providing information and guidance on credit use, budgeting, loan repayment, financial planning, and responsible management of borrowed funds. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ knowledge of agricultural loan management. It will assess the extent to which extension services provide farmers with information and guidance on the proper management of agricultural loans. The study will also determine how access to agricultural extension services influences farmers’ knowledge of loan utilisation, repayment planning, budgeting, and other aspects of agricultural loan management. The study will focus on farmers’ access to extension information on agricultural loans, extension contact frequency, training on credit management, financial planning guidance, and advisory support on loan utilisation. It will assess farmers’ knowledge of loan budgeting, appropriate use of borrowed funds, repayment scheduling, interest obligations, record keeping, monitoring of loan expenditure, and management of repayment commitments. The study will also consider farmers’ knowledge of avoiding diversion of loan funds and maintaining proper financial records for agricultural borrowing. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their access to agricultural extension services and their knowledge of agricultural loan management. The data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation. Correlation and regression analysis will also be used to examine the relationship between agricultural extension contact and farmers’ knowledge of agricultural loan management. The study is expected to reveal that agricultural extension may have a positive effect on farmers’ knowledge of agricultural loan management. Farmers who receive regular extension guidance and training may demonstrate better understanding of loan utilisation, budgeting, repayment planning, record keeping, and financial obligations. However, limited extension contact, inadequate financial management training, complex loan conditions, insufficient access to financial information, and limited availability of qualified extension personnel may restrict farmers’ knowledge of effective agricultural loan management. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, financial institutions, government agricultural agencies, cooperative societies, agricultural development programmes, policymakers, and researchers. The findings may provide useful information for strengthening the financial and credit-related components of agricultural extension services. The study may also assist extension organisations and lending institutions in developing farmer education programmes that promote responsible loan use, effective financial planning, and improved repayment management. The study concludes that agricultural extension can contribute to improving farmers’ knowledge of agricultural loan management by providing relevant financial and credit-related information. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies should incorporate loan management education into their advisory programmes and provide farmers with practical guidance on budgeting, loan utilisation, repayment planning, record keeping, and financial management. Collaboration between extension agencies, financial institutions, and farmer organisations should also be strengthened to improve farmers’ access to reliable agricultural loan management information.
