Abstract
The study will examine the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ adoption of water storage practices. Effective water storage is important for improving the availability of water for agricultural activities, particularly during periods of inadequate rainfall or irregular water supply. Adoption of appropriate water storage practices can help farmers conserve available water, improve water-use efficiency, and support more reliable crop production. The study will focus on farmers’ adoption of water storage practices, including the use of farm ponds, water tanks, reservoirs, storage containers, rainwater harvesting structures, and other suitable methods of collecting and storing water for agricultural purposes. It will also examine the role of agricultural extension in providing farmers with information and practical guidance on the selection, construction, maintenance, and proper use of water storage facilities. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers in the selected study area, from whom a representative sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on farmers’ exposure to agricultural extension and their adoption of water storage practices. The data collected will be analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, standard deviation, and an appropriate inferential statistical technique. The study is expected to reveal the level of farmers’ exposure to agricultural extension and the extent to which they adopt recommended water storage practices. It is also expected to identify the major water storage methods adopted by farmers and areas where extension support contributes to improved knowledge and application of appropriate water collection, storage, maintenance, and utilization practices. The findings will be useful to agricultural extension officers, agricultural development agencies, water management institutions, farmers’ organizations, and policymakers by providing information on the contribution of agricultural extension to farmers’ adoption of water storage practices. The findings may also assist extension personnel in developing practical training programmes and demonstrations on water storage technologies and their appropriate management. The study will conclude that agricultural extension can provide farmers with relevant knowledge and technical guidance needed to improve the adoption of appropriate water storage practices. It will recommend regular extension education, practical demonstrations, farm visits, and technical support on water collection, storage facility management, maintenance, and efficient water use to encourage sustainable agricultural water management.
