Effect of Agricultural Extension on Farmers’ Adoption of Store Ventilation Practices

Abstract

The study will examine the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ adoption of store ventilation practices. Proper ventilation in agricultural storage facilities is important for maintaining suitable storage conditions, regulating air movement, reducing excessive moisture accumulation, and protecting stored produce from deterioration. Adequate ventilation can also help reduce conditions that contribute to mould growth, spoilage, and other forms of post-harvest loss. The study will focus on the extent to which farmers adopt appropriate store ventilation practices following agricultural extension support. Specific areas will include maintaining adequate openings for air circulation, keeping ventilation points unobstructed, arranging stored produce to allow air movement, maintaining suitable spacing between stacks and walls, inspecting ventilation conditions, adjusting openings when necessary, and keeping ventilation structures clean. Agricultural extension is expected to provide farmers with relevant information and practical guidance on effective ventilation management in agricultural stores. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers in the selected study area, from whom respondents will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on farmers’ access to agricultural extension, knowledge of store ventilation, and adoption of relevant ventilation practices. The data collected will be analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, standard deviation, and an appropriate inferential statistical technique. The study is expected to reveal that agricultural extension contributes to farmers’ adoption of appropriate store ventilation practices. The findings may indicate improvements in maintaining ventilation openings, ensuring adequate air circulation, arranging produce appropriately, maintaining spacing, inspecting ventilation points, and keeping ventilation structures free from obstruction. The study may also identify challenges that affect farmers’ consistent application of recommended ventilation practices. The findings will be useful to agricultural extension officers, agricultural development agencies, farmers’ organizations, storage facility operators, and policymakers by providing information on the role of extension in improving storage environment management. The findings may assist extension personnel in developing practical advisory programmes that strengthen farmers’ knowledge and skills in maintaining suitable ventilation conditions and protecting stored produce from moisture-related deterioration. The study will conclude that effective agricultural extension can enhance farmers’ knowledge and adoption of store ventilation practices. It will recommend that extension officers provide practical demonstrations, storage facility inspections, advisory visits, and follow-up support on ventilation openings, air circulation, produce arrangement, spacing, and maintenance of ventilation structures to improve storage conditions and reduce post-harvest losses.
