Effect of Agricultural Extension on Farmers’ Adoption of Sheep Lambing Management

Abstract

Livestock identification systems are important tools for effective animal management because they enable farmers to distinguish individual animals and maintain accurate information about their identity, ownership, health, breeding history, production performance, and movement. Proper identification can support record keeping, breeding management, disease control, animal traceability, and livestock marketing. Farmers’ knowledge of appropriate livestock identification systems is therefore important for improving herd management and production efficiency. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of livestock identification systems. The study will assess the level of farmers’ knowledge of livestock identification systems and determine their understanding of the importance and application of different identification methods. It will examine farmers’ knowledge of ear tagging, branding, ear notching, tattooing, electronic identification, identification numbers, and other appropriate methods used for identifying livestock. The study will also assess farmers’ understanding of the importance of maintaining accurate identification records and linking animal identification with breeding, health, production, and ownership information. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge, livestock identification systems, animal identification methods, ear tagging, branding, ear notching, tattooing, electronic identification, identification records, animal traceability, livestock management, animal health records, breeding records, and livestock movement documentation. Information will be obtained on farmers’ awareness and understanding of different identification systems and their practical applications. The study will also identify sources of information and challenges that may influence farmers’ knowledge of livestock identification practices. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from livestock farmers through structured questionnaires designed to assess their knowledge of livestock identification systems. The collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequencies, percentages, mean scores, and standard deviations. Where appropriate, inferential techniques such as chi-square and correlation analysis may be used to examine relationships between selected farmer characteristics, sources of information, and levels of knowledge. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of farmers’ knowledge of livestock identification systems. Farmers may demonstrate better knowledge of commonly used methods such as ear tagging and branding but may have limited knowledge of electronic identification, systematic identification numbering, and the use of identification records for traceability and herd management. The study may also indicate that exposure to extension services, livestock training, farming experience, and access to technical information influence farmers’ knowledge of livestock identification systems. The study will be useful to livestock farmers, agricultural extension agents, livestock development agencies, veterinary professionals, policymakers, researchers, and other stakeholders involved in livestock production and management. It may provide useful information for identifying knowledge gaps and improving extension programmes on livestock identification and traceability. The findings may also assist relevant organisations in developing practical training programmes that promote appropriate identification methods and accurate animal documentation. The study concludes that adequate knowledge of livestock identification systems is important for effective livestock management, record keeping, traceability, and production planning. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies and livestock development organisations should provide regular training, demonstrations, and advisory services on appropriate livestock identification methods and record management. Farmers should be encouraged to adopt suitable identification systems and maintain accurate identification records to improve animal management, breeding decisions, health monitoring, and livestock traceability.
