Effect of Agricultural Extension on Farmers’ Adoption of Produce Storage Inspection Schedules

Abstract

The study will examine the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ adoption of produce storage inspection schedules. Regular inspection of stored agricultural produce is an important post-harvest management practice that enables farmers to monitor the condition of stored products, identify problems at an early stage, and take timely corrective measures. Proper inspection scheduling can help reduce storage losses, maintain produce quality, and improve the management of stored agricultural products. The study will focus on the extent to which farmers adopt produce storage inspection schedules following agricultural extension support. Specific areas will include establishing regular inspection intervals, checking produce condition, monitoring signs of pest activity, observing moisture and physical changes, identifying damaged or deteriorated produce, checking storage facilities, recording inspection findings, and taking corrective action when problems are detected. Agricultural extension is expected to provide farmers with relevant information and practical guidance on developing and maintaining appropriate inspection schedules. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers in the selected study area, from whom respondents will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on farmers’ access to agricultural extension, knowledge of storage inspection schedules, and adoption of relevant inspection practices. The data collected will be analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, standard deviation, and an appropriate inferential statistical technique. The study is expected to reveal that agricultural extension contributes to farmers’ adoption of produce storage inspection schedules. The findings may indicate improvements in the regularity of storage inspections, monitoring of produce condition, detection of pests and deterioration, inspection of storage facilities, documentation of findings, and timely corrective action. The study may also identify challenges that limit farmers’ ability to maintain regular inspection schedules. The findings will be useful to agricultural extension officers, agricultural development agencies, farmers’ organizations, storage facility operators, and policymakers by providing information on the role of extension in strengthening storage inspection practices. The findings may assist extension personnel in developing practical advisory programmes that improve farmers’ ability to organize regular inspections and respond promptly to storage problems. The study will conclude that effective agricultural extension can enhance farmers’ knowledge and adoption of produce storage inspection schedules. It will recommend that extension officers provide practical demonstrations, inspection planning guidance, regular advisory visits, and follow-up support on establishing inspection intervals, recording observations, identifying storage problems, and implementing timely corrective measures.
