Effect of Agricultural Extension on Farmers’ Adoption of Produce Stacking Practices

Abstract

The study will examine the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ adoption of produce stacking practices. Proper stacking of agricultural produce is an important post-harvest handling activity that can help protect farm products from physical damage, contamination, excessive pressure, and poor ventilation. Appropriate stacking practices can also improve the organization of stored and transported produce, facilitate inspection, and reduce avoidable post-harvest losses. The study will focus on the extent to which farmers adopt appropriate produce stacking practices following agricultural extension support. Specific areas will include selecting suitable stacking surfaces, arranging produce according to type and condition, maintaining appropriate stack height, allowing adequate ventilation, avoiding excessive pressure, separating damaged produce, maintaining safe spacing between stacks, and regularly inspecting stacked produce. Agricultural extension is expected to provide farmers with relevant knowledge and practical guidance on safe and effective stacking methods. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers in the selected study area, from whom respondents will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on farmers’ access to agricultural extension, knowledge of produce stacking, and adoption of relevant stacking practices. The data collected will be analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, standard deviation, and an appropriate inferential statistical technique. The study is expected to reveal that agricultural extension contributes to farmers’ adoption of appropriate produce stacking practices. The findings may indicate improvements in the arrangement of produce, control of stack height, provision of ventilation, separation of damaged products, maintenance of safe spacing, and regular inspection of stacked produce. The study may also identify challenges that limit farmers’ consistent adoption of recommended stacking practices. The findings will be useful to agricultural extension officers, agricultural development agencies, farmers’ organizations, produce marketers, and policymakers by providing information on the contribution of extension services to improved post-harvest handling. The findings may assist extension personnel in developing practical training and advisory programmes that improve farmers’ skills in stacking agricultural produce and minimizing losses during storage and handling. The study will conclude that effective agricultural extension can enhance farmers’ knowledge and adoption of appropriate produce stacking practices. It will recommend that extension officers provide practical demonstrations, farm visits, and follow-up advisory services on proper stack arrangement, height, spacing, ventilation, inspection, and protection of agricultural produce to improve produce quality and reduce post-harvest losses.
