Effect of Agricultural Extension on Farmers’ Adoption of Produce Movement Documentation

Abstract

The study examines the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ adoption of produce movement documentation. Produce movement documentation involves systematically recording information about the movement of agricultural produce from farms to storage facilities, processing centres, markets, buyers, and other destinations. Proper documentation can improve traceability, accountability, inventory management, transaction verification, and coordination within agricultural supply chains. Agricultural extension can provide farmers with the knowledge, skills, and technical guidance required to adopt and maintain appropriate produce movement documentation practices. The study will assess the nature and extent of agricultural extension support available to farmers in relation to produce movement documentation. It will specifically examine farmers’ access to extension education, advisory visits, training, demonstrations, and information on movement documentation. The study will also assess the level of farmers’ adoption of practices such as recording quantities, dates of movement, destinations, transportation details, recipients, and other relevant information, as well as identify challenges affecting adoption. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers in the selected study area, from whom respondents will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on farmers’ access to agricultural extension services, knowledge, and adoption of produce movement documentation practices. The data collected will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviation, while appropriate inferential statistical techniques will be used to determine the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ adoption of produce movement documentation. The study is expected to reveal that farmers with greater access to agricultural extension support will demonstrate higher levels of adoption of produce movement documentation practices. Extension education, practical demonstrations, regular farm visits, and advisory services are expected to improve farmers’ understanding of the importance and application of movement records. However, inadequate extension coverage, limited record-keeping skills, lack of suitable documentation materials, financial constraints, and limited awareness may restrict adoption among some farmers. The findings will provide useful information to agricultural extension personnel, policymakers, agricultural development agencies, farmers’ organizations, produce marketers, transport stakeholders, and other actors involved in agricultural value-chain development. The study is expected to highlight the importance of strengthening extension programmes that provide practical guidance on produce documentation, transportation, tracking, and marketing. Improved documentation may help farmers monitor produce movement, verify deliveries, reduce transaction discrepancies, maintain reliable records, and strengthen accountability in agricultural marketing. The study will conclude that agricultural extension can contribute to improved adoption of produce movement documentation among farmers. It will recommend increased extension education, practical demonstrations, simplified documentation formats, regular advisory visits, and training on effective movement record management. Strengthening farmers’ capacity to document the movement of agricultural produce is expected to contribute to improved traceability, accountability, record keeping, marketing efficiency, and supply chain management.
