Abstract
Produce cleaning equipment plays an important role in improving the cleanliness, quality, safety, and marketability of harvested agricultural products. Proper cleaning of farm produce can help remove dirt, unwanted materials, and other contaminants that may reduce product quality and consumer acceptability. Agricultural extension can support farmers by providing information, technical guidance, demonstrations, and practical training on the appropriate use and benefits of produce cleaning equipment. The study will examine the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ adoption of produce cleaning equipment. Specifically, it will assess farmers’ access to extension information on produce cleaning equipment, determine the extent of extension support received by farmers, examine the level of adoption of produce cleaning equipment, and identify the major factors influencing farmers’ adoption of such equipment. A descriptive survey design will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on agricultural extension services and the adoption of produce cleaning equipment. Appropriate sampling techniques will be used to select respondents, while the collected data will be analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation. Inferential statistical techniques may also be employed to determine the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ adoption of produce cleaning equipment. The study is expected to reveal that agricultural extension has a positive effect on farmers’ adoption of produce cleaning equipment. Farmers who receive regular extension information, practical demonstrations, technical guidance, and follow-up support are expected to show greater awareness and use of appropriate cleaning equipment. However, factors such as high equipment costs, limited availability, inadequate technical knowledge, poor access to extension services, and maintenance challenges may constrain adoption. The findings are expected to provide useful information for agricultural extension officers, policymakers, agricultural development agencies, equipment suppliers, and farmers’ organizations. Strengthened extension education and practical demonstrations may improve farmers’ knowledge and confidence in using produce cleaning equipment, thereby contributing to improved produce handling, quality maintenance, and market readiness. The study will conclude that agricultural extension is an important source of information and technical support for promoting farmers’ adoption of produce cleaning equipment. It will recommend increased extension visits, practical demonstrations, training programmes, improved access to suitable equipment, and continuous technical support to encourage effective adoption and utilization of produce cleaning equipment among farmers.
