Effect of Agricultural Extension on Farmers’ Adoption of Improved Nursery Management Practices

Abstract

Improved nursery management practices involve the use of recommended techniques for producing healthy, vigorous, and high-quality seedlings for successful crop establishment. Proper nursery management is important because the quality of seedlings can influence plant survival, early growth, productivity, and eventual crop yield. Practices such as appropriate nursery site selection, seed selection and treatment, nursery bed preparation, proper sowing, watering, shading, nutrient management, weed control, pest and disease management, hardening, and careful transplanting are essential for effective nursery production. Agricultural extension provides farmers with technical information, practical training, demonstrations, and advisory support that can encourage the adoption of these improved nursery management practices. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ adoption of improved nursery management practices. The study will assess the level of adoption of recommended nursery management practices among farmers and determine the extent to which agricultural extension services influence their adoption. It will also examine farmers’ access to extension services, frequency of extension contact, and the major sources through which farmers obtain information on improved nursery management practices. The study will focus on farmers’ adoption of improved nursery site selection, soil preparation, nursery bed construction, seed selection, seed treatment, sowing methods, spacing, watering, shading, fertilizer and manure application, weed management, pest and disease control, seedling protection, hardening, seedling selection, and transplanting practices. Attention will also be given to extension methods used to promote these practices, including farm visits, practical demonstrations, training programmes, field days, farmer field schools, group meetings, and agricultural advisory services. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to agricultural extension services and adoption of improved nursery management practices. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviations, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to determine the relationship between agricultural extension services and farmers’ adoption of improved nursery management practices. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of adoption of improved nursery management practices among farmers. Farmers with greater access to extension education, regular farm visits, practical demonstrations, training programmes, and relevant technical information may demonstrate higher levels of adoption. The study may also identify constraints affecting adoption, including inadequate extension contact, high costs of nursery materials, limited access to quality seeds, insufficient technical knowledge, water availability, pest and disease problems, and limited access to appropriate nursery equipment. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, nursery operators, agricultural development agencies, farmer associations, government institutions, researchers, and policymakers. The findings may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes aimed at promoting improved nursery management practices. Increased adoption may contribute to better seedling quality, higher plant survival, improved crop establishment, reduced production losses, increased agricultural productivity, and improved farm income. The study concludes that agricultural extension is an important factor in promoting farmers’ adoption of improved nursery management practices because it provides technical information, practical skills, and advisory support. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen nursery management programmes through regular farm visits, practical demonstrations, farmer training, field days, and accessible advisory services. Farmers should also be supported with quality seeds, suitable nursery materials, water resources, appropriate equipment, and timely technical information to encourage wider adoption of improved nursery management practices.
