Effect of Agricultural Extension on Farmers’ Adoption of Improved Fish Feed Management Practices

Abstract

Fish farming is an important agricultural enterprise that contributes to food supply, income generation, employment, and livelihood development. Feed management is a major component of fish production because feed quality, quantity, frequency, and application methods can directly affect fish growth, health, production efficiency, and profitability. Poor feed management can result in feed wastage, water pollution, slow fish growth, and increased production costs. Agricultural extension can provide fish farmers with relevant knowledge and technical guidance on improved feed management practices. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ adoption of improved fish feed management practices. It will assess farmers’ access to agricultural extension services and determine the extent to which extension support influences their adoption of recommended fish feed management practices. The study will also identify the major sources of fish feed information available to farmers and examine the challenges affecting their adoption of improved practices. The study will focus on farmers’ adoption of practices such as selection of appropriate feed types, proper feed storage, determination of suitable feeding rates, feeding frequency, feed distribution, adjustment of feed quantity according to fish size and biomass, observation of feeding response, reduction of feed wastage, and maintenance of appropriate water quality. It will also consider farmers’ access to extension visits, training, practical demonstrations, advisory materials, and information on efficient feed utilisation and management. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from fish farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their access to agricultural extension services and adoption of improved fish feed management practices. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, adoption-level assessment, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the relationship between agricultural extension and farmers’ adoption of recommended fish feed management practices. The study is expected to reveal that fish farmers with greater access to agricultural extension services may demonstrate higher levels of adoption of improved fish feed management practices. Extension contact, training, and practical demonstrations may improve farmers’ ability to select suitable feeds, determine appropriate feeding rates, manage feeding frequency, minimise feed wastage, and monitor fish feeding behaviour. However, high feed costs, limited access to quality feeds, inadequate extension contact, insufficient technical knowledge, and poor storage facilities may continue to affect adoption. The study will be useful to fish farmers, agricultural extension agents, aquaculture specialists, farmer organisations, agricultural development agencies, policymakers, feed producers, non-governmental organisations, and researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes and improving farmers’ knowledge and application of efficient fish feed management practices. The findings may also support efforts to reduce feed wastage, lower production costs, improve fish growth, maintain water quality, and increase the profitability of fish farming. The study concludes that agricultural extension is important for promoting farmers’ adoption of improved fish feed management practices and improving aquaculture production efficiency. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen training, farm visits, practical demonstrations, and advisory services on fish feed management. Fish farmers should also be encouraged to participate actively in extension programmes and adopt appropriate feed selection, storage, feeding, and monitoring practices to improve fish production and reduce unnecessary feed losses.
