Effect of Agricultural Extension on Farmers’ Adoption of Harvest Tool Sanitation

Abstract

Harvest tool sanitation is an important agricultural hygiene practice that involves cleaning and maintaining harvesting tools to reduce the transfer of dirt, contaminants, and harmful organisms between plants and harvested produce. Proper sanitation of knives, scissors, clippers, baskets, and other harvesting tools can help maintain produce quality, reduce contamination, and support safer postharvest handling. Agricultural extension can provide farmers with information, practical demonstrations, and technical guidance on appropriate harvest tool sanitation practices. The study will examine the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ adoption of harvest tool sanitation. Specifically, it will assess farmers’ access to extension information on harvest tool sanitation, determine the extent of extension support received, examine farmers’ level of adoption of recommended sanitation practices, and identify the major factors influencing their adoption of harvest tool sanitation. A descriptive survey design will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on agricultural extension and the adoption of harvest tool sanitation practices. Appropriate sampling techniques will be used to select respondents, while the collected data will be analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation. Inferential statistical techniques may also be employed to determine the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ adoption of harvest tool sanitation. The study is expected to find that agricultural extension has a positive effect on farmers’ adoption of harvest tool sanitation practices. Farmers who receive regular extension information, practical demonstrations, technical advice, and follow-up support are expected to demonstrate greater application of appropriate sanitation practices. However, inadequate extension contact, limited access to cleaning materials, lack of water, insufficient technical knowledge, and reliance on traditional practices may constrain adoption among some farmers. The findings are expected to provide useful information for agricultural extension officers, policymakers, agricultural development agencies, farmers’ organizations, and other stakeholders involved in agricultural production and postharvest management. Strengthened extension services may improve farmers’ knowledge and practical skills in harvest tool sanitation, contributing to improved produce hygiene, reduced contamination, and better quality of harvested agricultural products. The study will conclude that effective agricultural extension is important for promoting farmers’ adoption of harvest tool sanitation practices. It will recommend increased extension visits, practical field demonstrations, farmer training, improved access to appropriate sanitation materials, and continuous technical support to encourage proper sanitation of harvesting tools and improve the quality and safety of agricultural produce.
