Effect of Agricultural Extension on Farmers’ Adoption of Feed Mixing Practices

Abstract

The study examines the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ adoption of feed mixing practices. Proper feed mixing is an important aspect of livestock production because it helps farmers combine different feed ingredients in appropriate proportions to provide balanced and nutritious diets for livestock. Inadequate knowledge of feed mixing techniques may result in poor nutrient utilization, feed wastage, increased production costs, and reduced livestock performance. Agricultural extension provides farmers with technical information and practical guidance that can improve their knowledge and application of appropriate feed mixing methods. The study will assess farmers’ exposure to agricultural extension information on feed mixing and examine the extent to which farmers adopt recommended feed mixing practices. It will also identify the major feed mixing methods used by farmers and determine the types of extension information provided on the selection, measurement, proportioning, and combination of feed ingredients. The study will consider practices such as accurate measurement of ingredients, proper ingredient selection, appropriate mixing ratios, uniform mixing, and hygienic handling of mixed feeds. A descriptive survey design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise livestock farmers in the selected study area, from whom respondents will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire administered to the sampled farmers. Descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation will be used to analyze the data, while an appropriate inferential statistical technique will be employed to determine the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ adoption of feed mixing practices. The study is expected to reveal the level of farmers’ access to agricultural extension information on feed mixing and the extent of their adoption of recommended practices. It is also expected to identify the commonly used feed mixing methods and the major challenges farmers encounter in preparing properly mixed livestock feeds. The findings may further indicate areas where additional extension education and practical demonstrations are required to improve farmers’ feed mixing skills. The study will be useful to agricultural extension officers, livestock development agencies, policymakers, and farmers’ organizations by providing information on the role of extension services in promoting appropriate feed mixing practices. The findings may assist extension personnel in designing practical training programmes that focus on feed formulation, ingredient measurement, mixing procedures, and hygienic feed preparation. Improved feed mixing practices may contribute to better feed utilization, reduced wastage, and improved livestock productivity. The study will conclude by assessing the contribution of agricultural extension to farmers’ adoption of appropriate feed mixing practices. Based on the findings, the study will recommend strengthened extension education, practical demonstrations, regular farm visits, and improved access to technical information on livestock feed preparation. These measures may enhance farmers’ capacity to prepare properly mixed feeds and contribute to more efficient and sustainable livestock production.
