Effect of Agricultural Extension on Farmers’ Adoption of Farm Material Reuse

Abstract

The study examines the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ adoption of farm material reuse, focusing on how extension education and advisory services influence farmers’ use of available agricultural materials for productive purposes. Farm material reuse provides opportunities for farmers to reduce waste, conserve resources, lower production costs, and improve the efficiency of agricultural production. Materials such as crop residues, animal waste, organic materials, used containers, and other farm by-products can be reused when farmers have adequate knowledge of appropriate and safe reuse practices. The study will assess the extent of farmers’ access to agricultural extension services and determine their level of adoption of farm material reuse practices. It will examine extension activities such as farm visits, farmer training, field demonstrations, group meetings, and advisory services. The study will also identify the farm material reuse practices adopted by farmers, including the reuse of crop residues for mulching, composting, animal feeding, soil improvement, and other suitable agricultural purposes. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers in the selected study area, from whom respondents will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on farmers’ access to agricultural extension services and their adoption of farm material reuse practices. Data collected will be analysed using frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviations, while appropriate inferential statistical techniques will be used to determine the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ adoption of farm material reuse. The study is expected to find that farmers who have regular contact with agricultural extension personnel demonstrate greater awareness and adoption of farm material reuse practices. Extension services may improve farmers’ knowledge of appropriate reuse methods, safety considerations, potential benefits, and practical applications of different agricultural materials. Practical demonstrations and direct technical guidance may further encourage farmers to incorporate material reuse into their routine farming activities. However, inadequate extension contact, limited access to relevant information, lack of appropriate technologies, and farmers’ limited financial resources may constrain adoption. The findings are expected to provide useful information to agricultural extension officers, policymakers, development agencies, and farmers’ organizations on the role of extension services in promoting efficient management and reuse of farm materials. Strengthening extension education through practical demonstrations, regular farm visits, farmer training, and accessible technical information may encourage wider adoption of appropriate material reuse practices. The study will conclude that agricultural extension can contribute to improved adoption of farm material reuse by providing farmers with relevant knowledge, skills, and technical support. It will recommend increased extension contact, practical training on material reuse, demonstration of locally appropriate techniques, and stronger collaboration between extension personnel and farmers to promote resource conservation, waste reduction, and sustainable agricultural production.
