Effect of Agricultural Extension on Farmers’ Adoption of Farm Machinery Cleaning Practices

Abstract

Farm machinery cleaning is an important aspect of agricultural machinery management because regular cleaning helps maintain equipment condition, improve operational efficiency, reduce contamination, and extend the useful life of farm machinery. Farm equipment may accumulate soil, plant residues, chemicals, grease, and other materials during field operations, which can contribute to corrosion, mechanical problems, and reduced performance when not properly removed. Agricultural extension can provide farmers with relevant information and practical guidance on appropriate machinery cleaning practices. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ adoption of farm machinery cleaning practices. The study will assess farmers’ access to agricultural extension services, determine their knowledge of recommended machinery cleaning procedures, and examine the extent to which extension support influences their adoption of appropriate cleaning practices. It will also assess the frequency of extension contact and the types of technical information provided to farmers on farm machinery maintenance. The study will focus on agricultural extension, farm machinery cleaning, farmers’ knowledge, extension contact, equipment sanitation, removal of soil and plant residues, cleaning of machinery components, safe use of cleaning materials, post-operation cleaning, machinery inspection, corrosion prevention, equipment maintenance, and adoption of recommended cleaning practices. Information will be obtained from farmers who use agricultural machinery to determine their exposure to extension services and the extent to which the information received is applied in machinery cleaning activities. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires and appropriate observation checklists. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distributions, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between agricultural extension and farmers’ adoption of farm machinery cleaning practices. The study is expected to reveal that agricultural extension may improve farmers’ knowledge and adoption of recommended farm machinery cleaning practices. Farmers who receive regular technical guidance, practical demonstrations, and advisory services may demonstrate better cleaning of machinery after use, removal of soil and plant residues, appropriate handling of cleaning materials, and routine inspection of equipment. The study may also indicate that regular extension contact contributes to improved machinery maintenance practices and greater awareness of the consequences of poor equipment cleaning. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural machinery operators, agricultural development agencies, equipment dealers, researchers, agricultural cooperatives, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes on farm machinery management and maintenance. The findings may also assist extension personnel in developing practical training programmes that promote proper equipment cleaning and maintenance among farmers. The study concludes that agricultural extension is an important source of technical knowledge and practical support for improving farmers’ adoption of farm machinery cleaning practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen practical demonstrations, machinery maintenance training, farm visits, and follow-up advisory services for machinery-using farmers. Extension programmes should emphasize timely cleaning, safe cleaning procedures, removal of residues, machinery inspection, and corrosion prevention to support efficient and sustainable farm machinery use.
