Effect of Agricultural Extension on Farmers’ Adoption of Farm Landscape Management Practices

Abstract

The study will examine the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ adoption of farm landscape management practices. Effective farm landscape management is important for maintaining productive agricultural environments, conserving natural resources, reducing land degradation, and supporting biodiversity within farming areas. Adoption of appropriate landscape management practices can help farmers manage different components of the farm environment while sustaining agricultural productivity. The study will focus on farmers’ adoption of farm landscape management practices, including maintenance of vegetative cover, establishment of buffer areas, management of field boundaries, conservation of trees and natural vegetation, erosion control, protection of waterways, and appropriate arrangement of farm areas. It will also examine the role of agricultural extension in providing farmers with information, technical guidance, demonstrations, and farm-level support on sustainable landscape management. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers in the selected study area, from whom a representative sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on farmers’ exposure to agricultural extension and their adoption of farm landscape management practices. The data collected will be analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, standard deviation, and an appropriate inferential statistical technique. The study is expected to reveal the level of farmers’ exposure to agricultural extension and the extent to which they adopt recommended farm landscape management practices. It is also expected to identify areas where farmers demonstrate adequate or inadequate adoption, particularly in relation to vegetation management, field boundary maintenance, erosion control, waterway protection, and conservation of important landscape features. The findings will be useful to agricultural extension officers, agricultural development agencies, environmental management institutions, farmers’ organizations, and policymakers by providing information on the contribution of agricultural extension to improved farm landscape management. The findings may also assist extension personnel in developing practical training programmes and field demonstrations that encourage farmers to integrate resource conservation and landscape management into their farming activities. The study will conclude that agricultural extension can provide farmers with relevant knowledge and technical guidance needed to improve the adoption of appropriate farm landscape management practices. It will recommend regular extension education, practical demonstrations, farm visits, and technical guidance on vegetation conservation, field boundary management, erosion control, waterway protection, and sustainable landscape practices to promote productive and environmentally responsible farming.
