Effect of Agricultural Extension on Farmers’ Adoption of Educational Farm Activities

Abstract

Educational farm activities provide opportunities for farmers to use their farms as practical learning environments where agricultural knowledge, skills, technologies, and production experiences can be demonstrated and shared. Such activities may include farm demonstrations, guided farm visits, practical learning sessions, field days, farmer training events, and the demonstration of improved agricultural practices. Agricultural extension can support farmers by providing information, technical guidance, and encouragement to adopt and participate in educational activities that promote agricultural learning and knowledge exchange. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ adoption of educational farm activities. It will assess farmers’ exposure to agricultural extension services and determine the extent to which they adopt and participate in educational activities conducted on their farms. The study will also examine the relationship between access to agricultural extension and farmers’ adoption of educational farm activities. The study will focus on farmers’ adoption of activities such as demonstration plots, practical farm lessons, field demonstrations, farm visits, farmer field days, agricultural learning events, technology demonstrations, and knowledge-sharing sessions. It will also consider farmers’ exposure to extension visits, advisory meetings, training programmes, demonstration activities, field days, and other extension interventions that encourage farmers to use farm settings for practical agricultural education. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to measure their exposure to agricultural extension services and adoption of educational farm activities. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, adoption indices, mean scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the extent of adoption and the relationship between agricultural extension and farmers’ adoption of educational farm activities. The study is expected to reveal that farmers with greater exposure to agricultural extension services may demonstrate higher adoption of educational farm activities. Regular extension contact, demonstrations, training, and practical advisory support may encourage farmers to organise or participate in farm-based learning activities. However, inadequate extension coverage, limited training resources, lack of demonstration materials, financial constraints, time limitations, and insufficient awareness of the educational value of farm activities may restrict adoption. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, educational institutions, farmer cooperatives, policymakers, researchers, and non-governmental organisations. It may provide useful information on the role of agricultural extension in promoting farm-based learning and knowledge-sharing activities. The findings may also assist extension organisations and agricultural institutions in developing practical programmes that use farms as platforms for agricultural education, technology demonstration, and farmer-to-farmer learning. The study concludes that agricultural extension can contribute to farmers’ adoption of educational farm activities by providing relevant information, technical guidance, and practical support. It is therefore recommended that extension agencies strengthen demonstration-based extension approaches and encourage farmers to establish suitable educational activities on their farms. Extension agents should also provide practical guidance, learning materials, and regular support to improve the effectiveness and sustainability of farm-based educational activities.
