Effect of Agricultural Extension Education on Farmers’ Adoption of Soil Sampling Practices

Abstract

Soil sampling is an important agricultural practice that provides farmers with information about soil fertility, nutrient status, and other soil characteristics required for effective farm management. Proper soil sampling can support informed decisions on fertilizer application, soil amendment, crop selection, and nutrient management. However, many farmers may have limited knowledge of appropriate soil sampling procedures, including sample collection, sampling depth, selection of sampling points, handling, labeling, and submission of samples for analysis. Agricultural extension education can provide farmers with the technical knowledge and practical skills required to adopt appropriate soil sampling practices. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension education on farmers’ adoption of soil sampling practices. The study will assess farmers’ exposure to extension education, determine their level of knowledge of recommended soil sampling procedures, and examine the extent to which extension education influences their adoption of appropriate soil sampling practices. It will also assess the frequency of extension contact and the types of soil management information provided to farmers. The study will focus on agricultural extension education, soil sampling practices, farmers’ knowledge, extension contact, soil fertility assessment, sampling point selection, sampling depth, soil sample collection, sample handling, sample labeling, sample storage, laboratory submission, soil testing, and adoption of recommended soil sampling procedures. Information will be obtained from farmers to determine their exposure to extension education and the extent to which the knowledge acquired is applied in their farm management activities. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires and appropriate field observation methods. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distributions, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between agricultural extension education and farmers’ adoption of soil sampling practices. The study is expected to reveal that agricultural extension education may improve farmers’ knowledge and adoption of recommended soil sampling practices. Farmers who receive regular extension education, practical demonstrations, and technical advisory support may demonstrate greater understanding and application of appropriate sampling procedures. The study may also indicate that practical training and regular extension contact contribute to improved awareness of soil testing and better application of soil sampling techniques. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, soil scientists, agricultural development agencies, research institutions, agricultural cooperatives, non-governmental organizations, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes that promote soil fertility management and evidence-based agricultural practices. The findings may also assist extension personnel in developing practical training programmes that address farmers’ knowledge gaps concerning soil sampling and soil testing. The study concludes that agricultural extension education is an important source of technical knowledge and practical support for improving farmers’ adoption of soil sampling practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer training, practical demonstrations, farm visits, and follow-up advisory services on proper soil sampling procedures. Extension programmes should emphasize appropriate sampling points, sampling depth, sample collection, handling, labeling, and laboratory submission to support effective soil fertility management and improved farm productivity.
