Effect of Agricultural Extension Education on Farmers’ Adoption of Orchard Sanitation Practices

Abstract

The study examines the effect of agricultural extension education on farmers’ adoption of orchard sanitation practices. Orchard sanitation is an important component of fruit tree management because it helps maintain clean growing environments and reduce conditions that may encourage the development and spread of pests and diseases. Proper removal of fallen fruits, diseased plant materials, weeds, and other unwanted materials can contribute to healthier orchards and improved fruit production. Agricultural extension education can provide farmers with relevant knowledge and practical guidance on appropriate orchard sanitation practices. The study will assess farmers’ exposure to agricultural extension education on orchard sanitation and examine the extent to which farmers adopt recommended sanitation practices. It will also identify the major sanitation practices used by orchard farmers and determine the types of information provided through extension education programmes. The study will consider practices such as removal of fallen fruits, disposal of diseased plant materials, removal of dead branches, weed management, cleaning of orchard surroundings, and proper handling of orchard waste. A descriptive survey design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise orchard farmers in the selected study area, from whom respondents will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire administered to the sampled farmers. Descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation will be used to analyze the data, while an appropriate inferential statistical technique will be employed to determine the effect of agricultural extension education on farmers’ adoption of orchard sanitation practices. The study is expected to reveal the level of farmers’ exposure to extension education on orchard sanitation and the extent of their adoption of recommended practices. It is also expected to identify the commonly adopted sanitation practices and the major challenges farmers encounter in maintaining clean orchard environments. The findings may further indicate areas where additional extension education and practical demonstrations are required to strengthen farmers’ knowledge and application of orchard sanitation practices. The study will be useful to agricultural extension officers, horticultural development agencies, policymakers, and farmers’ organizations by providing information on the role of extension education in promoting effective orchard sanitation. The findings may assist extension personnel in designing practical educational programmes that focus on orchard cleanliness, removal of contaminated materials, weed management, and proper disposal of orchard waste. Improved sanitation practices may contribute to healthier orchards, reduced pest and disease pressure, and better fruit production. The study will conclude by assessing the contribution of agricultural extension education to farmers’ adoption of appropriate orchard sanitation practices. Based on the findings, the study will recommend regular extension visits, practical field demonstrations, farmer training programmes, and improved access to technical information on orchard sanitation. These measures may enhance farmers’ ability to maintain clean and productive orchards and support sustainable fruit production.
