Abstract
The study will examine the effect of agricultural extension education on farmers’ adoption of irrigation water measurement practices. Accurate measurement of irrigation water is important for determining the quantity of water applied to crops and promoting efficient water management. Adoption of appropriate water measurement practices can help farmers avoid excessive or insufficient irrigation, reduce water losses, and improve the efficiency of irrigation systems. The study will focus on farmers’ adoption of irrigation water measurement practices, including the use of water meters, flow measurement devices, measuring containers, calibrated equipment, and other appropriate methods for determining the quantity of irrigation water applied. It will also examine farmers’ practices in monitoring water flow, measuring application volumes, and adjusting water delivery according to crop requirements and available water resources. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers in the selected study area, from whom a representative sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on farmers’ exposure to agricultural extension education and their adoption of irrigation water measurement practices. The data collected will be analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, standard deviation, and an appropriate inferential statistical technique. The study is expected to reveal the level of farmers’ exposure to agricultural extension education and the extent to which they adopt recommended irrigation water measurement practices. It is also expected to identify areas where farmers demonstrate adequate or inadequate adoption, particularly in relation to water flow measurement, application volume determination, use of measuring devices, and monitoring of water delivery. The findings will be useful to agricultural extension officers, irrigation development agencies, water management institutions, farmers’ organizations, and policymakers by providing information on the contribution of extension education to improved irrigation water measurement practices. The findings may also assist extension personnel in developing practical training programmes and field demonstrations that improve farmers’ skills in measuring and managing irrigation water. The study will conclude that agricultural extension education can provide farmers with relevant knowledge and practical skills needed for accurate irrigation water measurement. It will recommend regular extension training, practical demonstrations, farm visits, and technical guidance on the use of water measurement devices and appropriate measurement procedures to encourage farmers’ adoption of efficient irrigation water measurement practices.
