Effect of Agricultural Extension Education on Farmers’ Adoption of Crop Scouting Practices

Abstract

Crop scouting is an important agricultural management practice that enables farmers to regularly inspect their fields and identify pests, diseases, weeds, nutrient deficiencies, and other crop production problems at an early stage. Timely detection of field problems can support appropriate decision-making and help farmers apply suitable control measures before crop damage becomes severe. However, effective crop scouting requires adequate knowledge of field observation methods, pest and disease identification, monitoring procedures, and appropriate recording practices. Agricultural extension education can provide farmers with the technical knowledge and practical skills required to adopt effective crop scouting practices. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension education on farmers’ adoption of crop scouting practices. The study will assess farmers’ exposure to extension education, determine their level of knowledge of crop scouting techniques, and examine the extent to which extension education influences their adoption of recommended scouting practices. It will also assess the frequency of extension contact and the types of crop monitoring information provided to farmers. The study will focus on agricultural extension education, crop scouting, farmers’ knowledge, field inspection, pest identification, disease identification, weed monitoring, crop growth assessment, field observation, pest population monitoring, scouting frequency, record keeping, early detection, and adoption of recommended crop scouting practices. Information will be obtained from farmers to determine their exposure to extension education and the extent to which the knowledge acquired is applied in routine crop monitoring activities. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires and appropriate field observation methods. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distributions, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between agricultural extension education and farmers’ adoption of crop scouting practices. The study is expected to reveal that agricultural extension education may improve farmers’ knowledge and adoption of recommended crop scouting practices. Farmers who receive regular extension education, practical demonstrations, and technical advisory support may demonstrate greater use of systematic field inspection, pest and disease identification, weed monitoring, crop growth assessment, and record keeping. The study may also indicate that regular extension contact and practical training contribute to timely identification of crop production problems and improved field management decisions. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, researchers, agricultural cooperatives, non-governmental organizations, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes that promote early detection and management of crop production problems. The findings may also assist extension personnel in developing practical training programmes that improve farmers’ capacity to monitor their fields and make informed crop management decisions. The study concludes that agricultural extension education is an important source of technical knowledge and practical support for improving farmers’ adoption of crop scouting practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer training, field demonstrations, regular advisory visits, and follow-up support on crop scouting techniques. Extension programmes should emphasize systematic field inspection, accurate pest and disease identification, weed monitoring, record keeping, and early detection practices to support effective crop management and sustainable agricultural production.
