Effect of Agricultural Extension Education on Farmers’ Adoption of Biosecurity Zoning on Livestock Farms

Abstract

Biosecurity zoning is an important livestock farm management practice that helps reduce the introduction and spread of animal diseases within and between farm areas. Proper zoning involves the organization of livestock facilities into designated areas according to their level of biosecurity risk, with appropriate separation of animals, personnel, equipment, feed, waste, and other farm activities. Agricultural extension education can provide livestock farmers with the knowledge and practical skills required to understand and adopt appropriate biosecurity zoning practices. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension education on farmers’ adoption of biosecurity zoning on livestock farms. The study will assess farmers’ exposure to extension education, determine their knowledge of biosecurity zoning principles, and examine the extent to which extension education influences their adoption of recommended zoning practices. It will also assess the frequency of extension contact and the types of biosecurity information provided to livestock farmers. The study will focus on agricultural extension education, biosecurity zoning, livestock farmers, farmers’ knowledge, extension contact, farm zoning, animal separation, controlled access, equipment management, personnel movement, feed management, waste disposal, quarantine areas, disease prevention, and adoption of recommended biosecurity practices. Information will be obtained from livestock farmers to determine their exposure to extension education and the extent to which the knowledge acquired is applied in their farm management activities. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected livestock farmers using structured questionnaires and appropriate farm observation checklists. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distributions, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between agricultural extension education and farmers’ adoption of biosecurity zoning practices. The study is expected to reveal that agricultural extension education may improve farmers’ knowledge and adoption of biosecurity zoning practices. Farmers who receive regular extension training, practical demonstrations, and technical advisory services may demonstrate greater adoption of designated farm zones, controlled movement of personnel and animals, separation of high-risk areas, appropriate waste management, and quarantine arrangements. The study may also indicate that regular extension contact and practical education contribute to improved application of farm biosecurity measures. The study will be useful to livestock farmers, agricultural extension agents, veterinary professionals, agricultural development agencies, livestock associations, researchers, non-governmental organizations, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes that promote livestock disease prevention and farm biosecurity. The findings may also assist extension personnel in developing practical training programmes that address farmers’ specific challenges in establishing and maintaining effective biosecurity zones. The study concludes that agricultural extension education is an important source of technical knowledge and practical support for improving farmers’ adoption of biosecurity zoning practices on livestock farms. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen regular farmer education, farm demonstrations, advisory visits, and follow-up services on biosecurity zoning. Extension programmes should emphasize farm-area separation, controlled access, quarantine arrangements, personnel and equipment movement, waste management, and other appropriate measures to support effective livestock disease prevention and sustainable farm management.
