Abstract

Hive inspection is an important beekeeping management practice that enables farmers to monitor the condition, strength, health, and productivity of bee colonies. Regular and appropriate inspection can help beekeepers identify problems such as queenlessness, pest infestation, diseases, inadequate food stores, weak colonies, and abnormal colony behaviour at an early stage. Agricultural extension education can provide farmers with the technical knowledge and practical skills required to conduct hive inspections safely and effectively. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension education on farmers’ adoption of beekeeping hive inspection practices. The study will assess the level of agricultural extension education received by farmers and determine its effect on their adoption of recommended hive inspection practices. It will examine farmers’ exposure to extension training, demonstrations, farm visits, advisory services, and educational materials relating to hive inspection. The study will also assess farmers’ adoption of practices such as selecting appropriate inspection times, using protective equipment, observing colony behaviour, checking the queen and brood, assessing food stores, identifying pests and diseases, and maintaining hive records. The study will focus on agricultural extension education, farmers, hive inspection, colony monitoring, queen assessment, brood inspection, food-store assessment, pest identification, disease detection, protective equipment, hive records, colony health, colony productivity, and beekeeping management. Information will be obtained on farmers’ knowledge and application of recommended hive inspection procedures. The study will also identify challenges such as inadequate extension contact, limited access to protective equipment, lack of inspection tools, insufficient technical knowledge, and fear of bee stings. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from beekeepers through structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on extension education exposure and adoption of hive inspection practices. The collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequencies, percentages, mean scores, and standard deviations. Inferential techniques such as correlation and regression analysis may also be used to determine the relationship between agricultural extension education and farmers’ adoption of recommended hive inspection practices. The study is expected to reveal that agricultural extension education may have a positive effect on farmers’ adoption of hive inspection practices. Farmers who receive regular and practical extension education may demonstrate greater knowledge and improved application of appropriate inspection procedures, including queen and brood assessment, food-store monitoring, pest and disease identification, and colony condition assessment. The study may also reveal that inadequate training, limited access to protective equipment, insufficient inspection tools, and irregular extension contact could constrain the adoption of recommended practices. The study will be useful to beekeepers, agricultural extension agents, apiculture development organisations, agricultural agencies, policymakers, researchers, and other stakeholders involved in beekeeping development. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension education programmes and improving farmers’ technical capacity in colony monitoring and hive inspection. The findings may also assist relevant organisations in developing practical training programmes that promote safe and effective hive inspection and early identification of colony management problems. The study concludes that agricultural extension education is important for improving farmers’ knowledge and adoption of appropriate beekeeping hive inspection practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies and apiculture development organisations should provide regular practical training, demonstrations, farm visits, and advisory services on safe hive inspection, queen and brood assessment, food-store monitoring, pest and disease identification, and colony health management. Extension programmes should also promote access to appropriate protective equipment and inspection tools to support effective hive management and sustainable beekeeping production.
