Effect of Agricultural Extension Campaigns on Farmers’ Use of Recommended Production Practices

Abstract

Agricultural extension campaigns are organized information and awareness activities designed to communicate agricultural knowledge, technologies, and recommended production practices to farmers. These campaigns may be delivered through field demonstrations, community meetings, radio programmes, workshops, mobile communication, printed materials, and other extension channels. Effective campaigns can provide farmers with timely information and practical guidance that may influence their understanding and use of recommended agricultural practices. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension campaigns on farmers’ use of recommended production practices. It will assess how farmers’ exposure to extension campaigns influences their application of recommended methods relating to land preparation, improved seed selection, planting, fertilizer application, pest management, weed control, harvesting, and post-harvest handling. The study will also examine the extent to which farmers apply information received through agricultural extension campaigns in their farming activities. The study will focus on agricultural extension campaigns, farmers’ use of recommended practices, agricultural information, extension communication, farmer awareness, improved production techniques, crop management, fertilizer application, pest management, weed control, and agricultural productivity. Attention will be given to the frequency, coverage, content, accessibility, and communication channels of extension campaigns and their relationship with farmers’ use of recommended production practices. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires, practice-use assessment schedules, and relevant farm records where available. Descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentage analysis, mean scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between exposure to agricultural extension campaigns and farmers’ use of recommended production practices. Comparative analysis may also be used to assess differences in practice use among farmers with different levels of campaign exposure. The study is expected to reveal that agricultural extension campaigns may have a positive effect on farmers’ use of recommended production practices. Farmers who receive regular, relevant, and understandable extension messages may be more likely to apply recommended techniques in their farming activities. The magnitude of the effect may depend on the frequency, quality, accessibility, practical content, and communication channels used in delivering the campaigns. The study will be useful to agricultural extension officers, farmers, government agricultural agencies, non-governmental organizations, agricultural development programmes, policymakers, and agricultural researchers. It may provide useful information for improving the planning and delivery of agricultural extension campaigns and strengthening communication between extension agencies and farming communities. The findings may also assist agricultural institutions in developing campaigns that address farmers’ specific production information needs. The study concludes that agricultural extension campaigns can contribute to the effective dissemination and use of recommended production practices by providing farmers with timely agricultural information and practical guidance. It is therefore recommended that extension agencies strengthen community-based campaigns, practical demonstrations, farmer training, and accessible communication channels to improve farmers’ awareness and use of appropriate production practices.
