Effect of Agricultural Extension Agents’ Workload on the Frequency of Farmer Advisory Visits

Abstract

Agricultural extension agents play an important role in providing farmers with technical information, advisory services, training, and practical guidance needed to improve agricultural production. The frequency of farmer advisory visits can influence farmers’ access to timely information and support for addressing production challenges. However, excessive workloads among extension agents may affect the amount of time and attention they are able to devote to individual farmers and communities, thereby influencing the regularity of advisory visits. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension agents’ workload on the frequency of farmer advisory visits. The study will assess the workload experienced by extension agents, determine the frequency of advisory visits made to farmers, and examine the relationship between agents’ workload and the regularity of farmer visits. It will also identify work-related factors that may affect the ability of extension agents to maintain regular contact with farmers. The study will focus on the number of farmers assigned to extension agents, geographical coverage, administrative responsibilities, reporting requirements, training activities, field travel, community meetings, programme implementation duties, and other extension-related tasks. It will also examine the frequency, duration, and regularity of farmer advisory visits, including visits for farm monitoring, technical advice, problem identification, demonstrations, and follow-up activities. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from agricultural extension agents through structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on workload levels, work responsibilities, farmer coverage, and advisory visit frequency. Relevant information on farmer advisory visits may also be obtained from available extension records. The data will be analysed using frequencies, percentages, means, standard deviations, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the relationship between extension agents’ workload and the frequency of farmer advisory visits. The study is expected to reveal that differences in extension agents’ workload may be associated with differences in the frequency of farmer advisory visits. Agents responsible for larger numbers of farmers or wider geographical areas may experience greater difficulty maintaining regular field contact. Heavy administrative duties, reporting requirements, travel demands, and multiple programme responsibilities may also reduce the time available for direct farmer advisory activities. The study will be useful to agricultural extension agents, farmers, agricultural development agencies, extension management authorities, farmers’ associations, policymakers, and agricultural researchers. The findings may provide useful information for improving extension workforce planning, farmer coverage, scheduling of field activities, distribution of responsibilities, and management of advisory services to ensure more consistent contact between extension agents and farmers. The study concludes that agricultural extension agents’ workload is an important consideration in the delivery and frequency of farmer advisory visits. It is therefore recommended that extension management authorities regularly assess agents’ workloads, improve the distribution of farmer assignments, reduce unnecessary administrative burdens, and provide adequate logistical support for field activities. Appropriate workload planning and scheduling should also be encouraged to facilitate regular and effective advisory visits to farmers.
