Effect of Agricultural Advisory Services on Farmers’ Knowledge of Saline Soil Management

Abstract

Saline soil is a major soil management challenge that can limit crop growth, reduce nutrient availability, affect water uptake, and lower agricultural productivity. The accumulation of soluble salts in the soil can interfere with plant development and may reduce the productive capacity of farmland when appropriate management practices are not applied. Agricultural advisory services can provide farmers with relevant information and technical guidance on identifying saline soil conditions and applying suitable management practices to improve soil productivity. This study will examine the effect of agricultural advisory services on farmers’ knowledge of saline soil management. It will assess farmers’ access to agricultural advisory services and determine the extent to which such services influence their knowledge of appropriate saline soil management practices. The study will also identify farmers’ major sources of information on saline soil management and examine the challenges affecting their access to advisory support. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of practices such as identification of soil salinity symptoms, appropriate irrigation management, drainage improvement, leaching of excess salts, use of salt-tolerant crop varieties, organic matter application, mulching, soil testing, appropriate fertilizer management, and measures for preventing further salt accumulation. It will also consider farmers’ knowledge of soil moisture management, water quality, salinity monitoring, and appropriate land management practices. The study will further examine farmers’ exposure to advisory visits, training, demonstrations, and technical information. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their access to agricultural advisory services and their knowledge of saline soil management. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, knowledge-level assessment, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the relationship between agricultural advisory services and farmers’ knowledge of saline soil management. The study is expected to reveal that farmers with greater access to agricultural advisory services may demonstrate higher levels of knowledge of saline soil management practices. Advisory services may improve farmers’ understanding of soil testing, drainage, irrigation management, salt leaching, use of tolerant crop varieties, organic matter management, and prevention of further salt accumulation. However, limited access to technical services, inadequate soil testing facilities, financial constraints, poor drainage infrastructure, limited availability of suitable inputs, and insufficient information may remain challenges affecting farmers’ knowledge. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, soil management specialists, agricultural development agencies, irrigation authorities, farmer organisations, policymakers, non-governmental organisations, and researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening advisory programmes on saline soil management and improving farmers’ capacity to manage affected agricultural land. The findings may also support efforts to improve soil productivity, maintain crop yields, promote sustainable land management, and reduce the adverse effects of soil salinity on agricultural production. The study concludes that agricultural advisory services are important for improving farmers’ knowledge of saline soil management and supporting sustainable management of salt-affected farmland. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension and advisory agencies strengthen farmer training, soil management demonstrations, soil testing education, and technical support on salinity management. Farmers should also be encouraged to make greater use of advisory services and apply appropriate soil, water, and crop management practices to improve the productivity of saline soils.
