Effect of Agricultural Advisory Services on Farmers’ Knowledge of Farm Investment Decisions
Abstract
Agricultural investment decisions involve choices farmers make concerning the allocation of financial and other resources to farm activities, assets, technologies, inputs, and enterprises. Sound investment decisions are important for improving farm productivity, managing financial resources, reducing avoidable losses, and achieving sustainable farm operations. Agricultural advisory services can provide farmers with relevant information and technical guidance that may improve their understanding of investment opportunities, costs, risks, expected returns, and resource requirements associated with different farm investments. This study will examine the effect of agricultural advisory services on farmers’ knowledge of farm investment decisions. It will assess the extent to which farmers receive advisory information relating to farm investment and determine how such services influence their knowledge of investment planning and decision-making. The study will also examine farmers’ understanding of factors that should be considered when making investment decisions in agricultural enterprises. The study will focus on farmers’ access to investment-related advisory services, frequency of advisory contact, financial management information, enterprise selection guidance, investment planning, cost assessment, expected returns, risk consideration, credit information, and resource allocation. It will also examine farmers’ knowledge of investment decisions relating to farm machinery, improved inputs, livestock enterprises, irrigation facilities, storage facilities, processing equipment, land improvement, and other agricultural assets. The role of agricultural advisory agents in providing information for evaluating investment alternatives will also be considered. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their access to agricultural advisory services and their knowledge of farm investment decisions. The data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation. Correlation and regression analysis will also be used to examine the relationship between agricultural advisory services and farmers’ knowledge of farm investment decisions. The study is expected to reveal that agricultural advisory services may have a positive effect on farmers’ knowledge of farm investment decisions. Farmers who receive regular and relevant advisory information may demonstrate better understanding of investment costs, expected returns, risks, financing options, and resource allocation. However, limited advisory contact, inadequate financial information, insufficient knowledge of investment opportunities, poor access to credit information, and limited availability of qualified advisory personnel may constrain farmers’ ability to make informed investment decisions. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural advisory agents, extension organisations, financial institutions, government agricultural agencies, agricultural development programmes, policymakers, and researchers. The findings may provide useful information for strengthening advisory services that address the financial and investment-related needs of farmers. The study may also assist agricultural agencies and advisory professionals in developing practical guidance on farm investment planning, enterprise selection, cost management, risk assessment, and agricultural asset acquisition. The study concludes that agricultural advisory services are important for improving farmers’ knowledge of farm investment decisions by providing information and guidance required for evaluating agricultural investment opportunities. It is therefore recommended that advisory agencies should strengthen investment-related training, provide farmers with practical information on costs, returns, risks, and financing options, and improve access to reliable farm investment guidance. Advisory professionals should also incorporate investment planning and financial decision-making into agricultural advisory programmes to support informed and sustainable farm investment decisions.
