Assessment of Livestock Farmers’ Knowledge of Fodder Bank Management

Abstract

Fodder bank management is an important aspect of livestock production because it provides a reliable source of feed during periods of pasture scarcity and helps farmers maintain livestock nutrition throughout the year. Properly managed fodder banks can improve the availability, storage, and utilization of forage resources while reducing dependence on seasonal grazing. However, effective fodder bank management requires adequate knowledge of fodder selection, establishment, harvesting, preservation, storage, and utilization. Assessing livestock farmers’ knowledge of these practices is therefore important for improving feed management and livestock productivity. This study will assess livestock farmers’ knowledge of fodder bank management. The study will determine farmers’ level of knowledge of recommended fodder bank management practices, identify the management techniques commonly known by livestock farmers, and assess their understanding of appropriate fodder production, preservation, storage, and utilization methods. It will also identify areas where knowledge gaps may exist among livestock farmers. The study will focus on livestock farmers’ knowledge of fodder bank management, fodder species selection, fodder bank establishment, land preparation, forage planting, weed management, fertilizer application, fodder harvesting, drying, conservation, storage, protection from spoilage, feed rationing, and utilization of preserved fodder. Information will be obtained from livestock farmers to determine their knowledge of appropriate fodder bank management practices and identify challenges affecting their understanding and application of such practices. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected livestock farmers using structured questionnaires and appropriate field observation methods. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distributions, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data. Knowledge scores will be used to determine farmers’ levels of understanding, while relevant inferential statistical methods may be applied to examine associations between farmers’ characteristics and their knowledge of fodder bank management. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of knowledge among livestock farmers regarding fodder bank management. Some farmers may demonstrate adequate knowledge of fodder establishment, harvesting, and storage, while others may have limited knowledge of forage preservation, moisture management, storage protection, and appropriate utilization of conserved feed. The study may also identify specific knowledge gaps that limit the effective establishment and management of fodder banks. The study will be useful to livestock farmers, agricultural extension agents, livestock development agencies, researchers, agricultural cooperatives, non-governmental organizations, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for developing farmer education and extension programmes focused on improved fodder production and conservation. The findings may also assist stakeholders in promoting practical fodder bank management techniques that can improve feed availability and support sustainable livestock production. The study concludes that adequate knowledge of fodder bank management is important for effective livestock feed planning and utilization. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer training, practical demonstrations, field visits, and advisory services on fodder bank establishment and management. Extension programmes should emphasize fodder selection, establishment, harvesting, preservation, storage, and utilization to improve farmers’ knowledge and support consistent availability of quality livestock feed.
