Assessment of Farmers’ Sources of Agricultural Production Information
Abstract
Agricultural production information is essential for helping farmers make informed decisions about crop and livestock production, resource use, farm management, and the adoption of improved agricultural practices. Farmers obtain production information from different sources, including agricultural extension agents, fellow farmers, radio, television, social media, mobile phones, agricultural cooperatives, input dealers, research institutions, and other agricultural organisations. Understanding the sources farmers rely on can provide useful information for improving the delivery and accessibility of agricultural knowledge. This study will assess farmers’ sources of agricultural production information. It will identify the major sources from which farmers obtain information for planning and carrying out their farming activities. The study will also examine the frequency with which farmers use different information sources and determine the types of agricultural production information obtained from these sources. The study will focus on farmers’ use of agricultural extension agents, fellow farmers, farmer groups, cooperatives, radio, television, newspapers, mobile phones, social media platforms, agricultural websites, input suppliers, agro-dealers, research institutions, and government agricultural agencies as sources of production information. The types of information obtained will include improved seed varieties, land preparation, planting methods, fertilizer application, pest and disease management, weed control, irrigation, harvesting, post-harvest handling, and improved agricultural technologies. Farmers’ preferences for different information sources and challenges associated with accessing production information will also be examined. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their sources, frequency of information access, preferred information channels, and types of agricultural production information received. The data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation. Appropriate inferential statistical techniques, including correlation and regression analysis, will also be used to examine relationships between farmers’ use of information sources and their access to agricultural production information. The study is expected to reveal that farmers rely on multiple sources of agricultural production information, with informal sources such as fellow farmers and farmer groups potentially playing an important role alongside formal extension services and mass media. The level of reliance on different sources may vary according to accessibility, cost, reliability, convenience, and relevance of information provided. Farmers may also experience challenges such as limited access to extension agents, poor communication infrastructure, inadequate internet connectivity, high data costs, and difficulties obtaining timely and reliable production information. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, government agricultural agencies, research institutions, non-governmental organisations, agricultural cooperatives, input suppliers, and policymakers. The findings may help identify the information channels that are most accessible to farmers and provide a basis for improving agricultural information dissemination. The study may also assist extension organisations in combining interpersonal, group-based, mass media, and digital communication approaches to reach farmers more effectively. The study concludes that farmers’ access to appropriate agricultural production information depends on the availability, accessibility, reliability, and relevance of different information sources. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies should strengthen multiple information channels and ensure that production information is timely, accurate, understandable, and relevant to farmers’ needs. Greater collaboration among extension agents, farmer groups, media organisations, research institutions, and agricultural information providers should also be encouraged to improve farmers’ access to production information.
