Assessment of Farmers’ Perception of Agricultural Extension Agents
Abstract
Agricultural extension agents play an important role in providing farmers with technical information, advisory services, demonstrations, training, and support for improving agricultural production. The effectiveness of extension services may be influenced by how farmers perceive the agents who deliver them. Farmers’ perceptions may be shaped by the agents’ accessibility, communication skills, technical knowledge, responsiveness, frequency of contact, and ability to address farmers’ production challenges. This study will assess farmers’ perception of agricultural extension agents. It will examine how farmers perceive the roles, competencies, accessibility, communication, and service delivery of extension agents within their communities. The study will also assess farmers’ level of satisfaction with extension interactions and identify factors that influence their perceptions of agricultural extension agents. The study will focus on farmers’ perceptions of extension agents’ technical competence, communication skills, availability, responsiveness, reliability, professionalism, frequency of farm visits, and ability to provide relevant agricultural information. It will also examine farmers’ perceptions of the agents’ roles in crop production, livestock management, input use, pest and disease control, agricultural marketing, improved technology adoption, and farm management. Farmers’ experiences with extension meetings, demonstrations, training programmes, individual consultations, and group advisory activities will also be considered. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to measure their perceptions of agricultural extension agents and their experiences with extension services. The data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation. Correlation and regression analysis will also be used to examine relationships between farmers’ perceptions and selected characteristics of extension service delivery. The study is expected to reveal varying perceptions of agricultural extension agents among farmers. Farmers who have regular contact with extension agents and receive relevant and timely advisory services may report more favourable perceptions of the agents. Positive perceptions may be associated with effective communication, technical competence, accessibility, responsiveness, and practical support, while limited contact, inadequate follow-up, poor accessibility, and insufficient attention to farmers’ specific needs may contribute to less favourable perceptions. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, government agricultural agencies, agricultural development organisations, non-governmental organisations, policymakers, and researchers. The findings may provide useful information for understanding farmers’ experiences with extension service delivery and identifying areas requiring improvement. The study may also assist extension organisations in strengthening agent training, communication practices, farmer engagement, and service delivery approaches. The study concludes that farmers’ perceptions of agricultural extension agents are important for understanding the effectiveness and acceptability of extension service delivery. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies should strengthen the professional and communication skills of extension agents, improve regular contact with farmers, encourage responsiveness to farmers’ needs, and provide adequate logistical support for field activities. Extension agents should also maintain respectful and participatory relationships with farmers to improve the quality of agricultural advisory services.
