Abstract
The study will assess farmers’ knowledge of water retention structures on farmland. Water retention structures are important for slowing surface runoff, conserving soil moisture, reducing soil erosion, and improving the availability of water for crop production. Farmers’ knowledge of appropriate water retention structures can contribute to better farmland management, improved water conservation, and more sustainable agricultural production. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of different water retention structures, including farm ponds, contour bunds, terraces, retention basins, tied ridges, and other suitable structures used for conserving water on farmland. It will also examine farmers’ understanding of appropriate site selection, structure placement, construction requirements, maintenance practices, water storage capacity, and the role of these structures in reducing runoff and improving soil moisture. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers involved in crop production in the selected study area. A suitable sampling procedure will be used to select respondents, while data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to assess farmers’ knowledge of water retention structures on farmland. Data collected will be analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation. The study is expected to reveal the level of farmers’ knowledge of water retention structures and identify areas where knowledge may be inadequate. It is also expected to show farmers’ understanding of structure selection, appropriate placement, construction, maintenance, and the benefits of water retention structures for reducing runoff, conserving soil moisture, and supporting crop production. The findings will be useful to agricultural extension officers, agricultural development agencies, environmental management organizations, farmers’ associations, and other stakeholders involved in soil and water conservation. The study will provide information that can guide the development of extension programmes, field demonstrations, and practical training aimed at improving farmers’ knowledge and use of appropriate water retention structures. The study will conclude that adequate knowledge of water retention structures is important for effective farmland water conservation and sustainable soil management. It will recommend that agricultural extension services should provide farmers with practical demonstrations and technical information on the selection, construction, placement, maintenance, and proper use of suitable water retention structures to improve soil moisture conservation and reduce runoff-related losses.
