Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Visitor Safety in Agritourism

Abstract

Visitor safety is an important component of agritourism management because farm environments may expose visitors to agricultural machinery, livestock, uneven terrain, farm chemicals, water bodies, tools, and other potential hazards. Adequate safety measures can help protect visitors and improve their experience while reducing the likelihood of accidents and injuries. Farmers’ knowledge of visitor safety practices is therefore important for managing farm-based tourism activities responsibly and creating safer agritourism environments. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of visitor safety in agritourism. It will determine the extent to which farmers understand appropriate safety measures for protecting visitors during farm tours, agricultural demonstrations, recreational activities, and other farm-based experiences. The study will also examine farmers’ knowledge of hazard identification, visitor guidance, safety signs, restricted areas, emergency procedures, protective equipment, livestock handling, and basic first-aid measures. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of visitor safety, agritourism, hazard identification, farm safety, safety signs, visitor orientation, restricted farm areas, agricultural machinery safety, livestock safety, chemical safety, pathway management, emergency procedures, first aid, protective measures, and visitor management. It will also assess farmers’ sources of information on visitor safety and identify knowledge gaps and challenges that may affect their ability to maintain safe conditions for agritourism visitors. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers involved or interested in agritourism using structured questionnaires designed to assess their knowledge of visitor safety practices, sources of safety information, and understanding of potential farm hazards. The collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, and appropriate inferential statistical techniques to determine farmers’ level of knowledge and examine variations in knowledge across relevant farmer characteristics. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of farmers’ knowledge of visitor safety in agritourism. Farmers with greater exposure to agricultural extension services, safety training, tourism education, and agritourism advisory programmes may demonstrate higher levels of knowledge of hazard identification, visitor orientation, safety signage, emergency procedures, and appropriate protective measures. The study may also identify knowledge gaps relating to machinery, livestock, farm chemicals, water bodies, uneven surfaces, and the management of restricted areas. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, tourism operators, farmer cooperatives, government agricultural and tourism agencies, safety organisations, development organisations, policymakers, and agricultural researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension education and training programmes on agritourism safety management. The findings may also assist relevant stakeholders in developing practical safety guidelines and educational materials that improve farmers’ capacity to protect visitors during farm-based tourism activities. The study concludes that adequate knowledge of visitor safety is essential for the effective management of agritourism activities and the protection of farm visitors. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies and tourism organisations provide regular training on hazard identification, visitor orientation, safety signage, emergency response, livestock and machinery safety, chemical handling, and basic first aid. Farmers should also be encouraged to establish clear safety procedures and maintain safe visitor areas to reduce potential hazards and promote responsible agritourism development.
