Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Vermiculture for Agricultural Waste Management
Abstract
Vermiculture is a biological waste management practice that involves the use of earthworms to convert organic agricultural materials into useful products such as nutrient-rich vermicompost. Agricultural waste generated from crop residues, animal manure, and other farm activities can create environmental and sanitation problems when poorly managed. Farmers’ knowledge of vermiculture is therefore important because adequate understanding of the practice can support the effective utilization of agricultural waste, improve soil fertility, and reduce environmental pollution. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of vermiculture for agricultural waste management. The study will determine the level of farmers’ knowledge of vermiculture practices and examine their understanding of how earthworms can be used to decompose agricultural waste. It will also assess farmers’ awareness of the benefits of vermiculture and identify the major sources of information through which farmers acquire knowledge about the practice. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of suitable earthworm species, selection and preparation of organic waste materials, construction and management of vermiculture units, moisture and temperature requirements, feeding of earthworms, decomposition processes, harvesting of vermicompost, and appropriate use of vermicompost in agricultural production. It will also examine farmers’ knowledge of the environmental, soil fertility, and waste reduction benefits associated with vermiculture. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to measure their knowledge of vermiculture and agricultural waste management practices. The collected data will be analysed using frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations to determine farmers’ knowledge levels, while correlation and regression analyses will be used to examine relationships between farmers’ characteristics, information sources, and knowledge of vermiculture. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of farmers’ knowledge of vermiculture for agricultural waste management. Some farmers may demonstrate adequate knowledge of basic vermiculture practices, while others may have limited understanding of earthworm management, waste preparation, moisture control, and vermicompost production. The study may also identify inadequate extension information, limited practical training, lack of awareness, and insufficient access to vermiculture materials as possible knowledge-related challenges. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, environmental organisations, researchers, policymakers, and institutions involved in sustainable agriculture and waste management. The findings may provide useful information for designing extension programmes that promote vermiculture and improve farmers’ understanding of environmentally friendly methods of managing agricultural waste. The study concludes that farmers’ knowledge of vermiculture is important for promoting effective agricultural waste management and sustainable farming practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer education through practical demonstrations, training programmes, farm visits, and instructional materials on vermiculture. Farmers should also be encouraged to adopt appropriate vermiculture practices for converting agricultural waste into useful organic resources and improving the sustainability of agricultural production.
