Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Safe Working Conditions During Extreme Weather
Abstract
Extreme weather conditions such as excessive heat, heavy rainfall, strong winds, flooding, and prolonged dry conditions can create significant risks for farmers during agricultural activities. Working under unsafe weather conditions may increase the likelihood of accidents, physical exhaustion, heat-related problems, exposure to environmental hazards, and damage to farm operations. Farmers’ knowledge of safe working conditions is therefore important for helping them identify weather-related risks, adjust farm activities, and adopt appropriate safety measures during periods of extreme weather. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of safe working conditions during extreme weather. It will determine the extent to which farmers understand appropriate safety measures for working during periods of excessive heat, heavy rainfall, strong winds, and other severe weather conditions. The study will also examine farmers’ knowledge of appropriate work schedules, rest periods, protective clothing, hydration, shelter, weather monitoring, and situations in which farm activities should be postponed or suspended. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of extreme weather risks, safe working conditions, weather-related hazards, farm work scheduling, protective measures, hydration practices, rest periods, weather information, emergency preparedness, and agricultural safety. It will also assess farmers’ sources of weather and safety information and determine the extent to which agricultural extension agents, fellow farmers, media platforms, and other information sources contribute to their knowledge of safe working practices during extreme weather conditions. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their knowledge of safe working conditions and sources of weather-related safety information. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, and relevant inferential statistical techniques to determine variations in farmers’ knowledge according to selected characteristics, farming experience, exposure to extension education, and access to weather information. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of farmers’ knowledge of safe working conditions during extreme weather. Farmers with greater access to agricultural extension education and weather information may demonstrate better knowledge of appropriate safety measures, including adjustment of working hours, adequate hydration, use of protective clothing, access to shelter, and temporary suspension of activities during dangerous conditions. The study may also identify gaps in farmers’ understanding of weather-related occupational risks and appropriate responses to extreme weather events. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, weather information providers, occupational safety organisations, government agencies, non-governmental organisations, and agricultural researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening farmer education on weather-related safety and improving the dissemination of timely weather and agricultural safety information. The findings may also assist extension agencies in developing practical training programmes that promote safer working conditions under changing weather conditions. The study concludes that adequate knowledge of safe working conditions during extreme weather is important for protecting farmers and supporting safer agricultural operations. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer education on weather-related occupational safety, promote access to timely weather information, and provide practical guidance on work scheduling, hydration, protective measures, shelter, and suspension of activities during hazardous weather conditions. These measures may improve farmers’ preparedness and reduce weather-related risks during agricultural activities.
