Abstract
The study will assess farmers’ knowledge of safe stack height management in agricultural storage. Proper control of stack height is important for preventing the collapse of stored produce, reducing physical damage, improving storage stability, and protecting farmers and storage workers from avoidable accidents. Farmers’ knowledge of appropriate stack heights can therefore contribute to safer and more effective agricultural storage practices. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of determining appropriate stack heights for different agricultural produce, considering the type and condition of storage structures, weight and characteristics of stored produce, stability of stacked materials, available floor space, and ventilation requirements. It will also examine farmers’ understanding of the risks associated with excessive stack heights, unstable arrangements, poor spacing, and improper placement of heavy produce. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers involved in the storage and management of agricultural produce in the selected study area. A suitable sampling procedure will be used to select respondents, while data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to assess farmers’ knowledge of safe stack height management in agricultural storage. Data collected will be analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation. The study is expected to reveal the level of farmers’ knowledge of safe stack height management and identify areas where knowledge may be inadequate. It is also expected to show farmers’ understanding of appropriate stack heights, stable stacking arrangements, spacing requirements, ventilation, and the potential risks associated with excessive or poorly arranged stacks. The findings will be useful to agricultural extension officers, agricultural development agencies, farmers’ organizations, and other stakeholders involved in post-harvest management and agricultural storage. The study will provide information that can guide the development of extension programmes, practical demonstrations, and safety training aimed at improving farmers’ knowledge of safe stack height management and reducing storage-related risks. The study will conclude that adequate knowledge of safe stack height management is important for protecting stored agricultural produce and promoting safer storage operations. It will recommend that agricultural extension services should provide farmers with practical training, demonstrations, and technical information on appropriate stack heights, stable stacking arrangements, spacing, ventilation, and safe storage procedures.
